I'm quite sure the resolution remains the same, and that's maybe just a letterbox effect added by some mod.

Yep. Letterbox effect implemented via ENB or ReShade preset. So go into the overlay menu for the corresponding one (default keys for this are "Shift+Enter" for ENB and "Home" for ReShade), find the effect and disable it. Additional instructions or details are likely in the description of the preset you have installed, so give it a read.
