Is there any way to get NPCs/companions to wear tail items?

Other than changing an item into an amulet or ring, is there some way I can get people to equip the various tail slot items that mod outfits often have? Without making the game crash when I access their inventory, anyway.

I think a special script is needed for the tail slot items.

Ie. Dm wardrobe addon ( http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37152 ) has:

"version 7.1 =========== Release 2 esp files that fix the version 7.0 bugs & add the script for NPCs & companions to equip armor/clothing with tail-slot."

havent tested if it only applies to the items in the mod or in general.

Here is what I am using.

It will give you a spell Equip Tail Items, all you need to do is touch any other character with that spell, and they will equip the tail item. They will equip tail items, but it will not be instantenous. After going through a door, they will unequip it, but rest assured, they will equip it later.

Ah, if you set a Khajiit or Argonian character with tail items, they will lose their tails since their tails are originally 'equipped'.

Ah, excellent, thanks. That oughta work.

But will I be able to access their inventories while the tail item is equipped? I remember getting game crashes when I tried to open their inventories after using the console to make characters equip tails.

No problem for me. Well, I am using Toaster Says Share mod, I can access my recruited NPC inventory by talking to them, and I haven't had a single crash before.
