enterprise2001 Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 Went to update a few animation packs and ran FNIS for Users and instead of updating the animations, I got this error: ERROR(5): is not a valid Win32 application. (Exception from HRESULT: 0x800700C1) I have deleted and redownloaded FNIS from Nexus Mods and had Steam verify my Skyrim install. Searching for the error suggests the program has been damaged or corrupted, but since the reinstall of FNIS and verify of Skyrim didn't fix it, that doesn't seem likely. Or it could be the executable is not signed or compiled properly--which is outside my ability to fix. ?I am fairly tech savvy, but don't really know how Skyrim modding works. It appears a program that FNIS for Users is calling is the problem, but I don't know which program it is or how to fix it. Does anyone else have this error or know a way to fix it?
Grey Cloud Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 What is giving that error message? Presumably you are using Skyrim LE so the FNIS you require is this one: https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/11811?tab=files You also need to know how to install it correctly in your mod manager.
enterprise2001 Posted May 16, 2021 Author Posted May 16, 2021 It was working fine until I went to update animation packs the last time. I click "Update FNIS Behavior" and this happens:
Sgt. Marge Posted May 16, 2021 Posted May 16, 2021 I think it's generally recommended to have the "Gender Specific Animations" check box checked also. What mod manager are you using? I see that your skyrim install is not on your C:\ drive, but are you trying to run FNIS from C:\ ? (Make sure it's not in Program Files) Are you giving FNIS and your mod manager admin rights?
enterprise2001 Posted May 17, 2021 Author Posted May 17, 2021 I figured it out. Should anyone find this thread in the future and need the solution: I updated/installed ALL the Microsoft Visual C++ libraries and FNIS for Users is running as expected again. They are presently located at: https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/topic/the-latest-supported-visual-c-downloads-2647da03-1eea-4433-9aff-95f26a218cc0
enterprise2001 Posted May 17, 2021 Author Posted May 17, 2021 So the regular Generate FNIS for Users 7.6 works as expected, but the XXL version is the one that is not a valid Win32 application. I have completely reinstalled FNIS from NexusMods and verified Skyrim with Steam and (re)installed/updated MS .Net and all the MS Visual C++ libraries. None of those fixed the problem. Anyone have any other ideas what the issue could be?

The latest open source version of NMM: 0.80.12 Steam and all my my games are installed on the E:\ drive. Nope, never had to before. FNIS XXL worked just fine as-is until today when I tried to update some animation packs. This has to have been caused by something recent. Windows update maybe...? ?
Sgt. Marge Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 You may want to look into adding FNIS as an exception just as a test, and also admin rights. If that doesn't help, try temporarily disabling Windows Defender. If you do that make sure to turn defender back on after testing it. If none of that helps, feel free to revert those changes. I'm seeing notes about Vortex not needing to be run as admin. I don't know about NMM. This may be a dumb question, but... Have you tried turning it off and on again (the computer, that is) ? Are the animation updates definitely Skyrim Legendary versions? I know some packs will have both LE and SE versions in the download section. I don't know if that could cause that error though. Edit: I just saw your other 2 posts, I completely missed them a few minutes ago. That's pretty weird that regular FNIS works but not XXL. hmm......... I have to wonder if Windows is blocking it at this point.

I have to wonder if Windows is blocking it at this point. Tried all that. Didn't help... ? I'm tech savvy and I know from experience that a program that suddenly becomes invalid did because: 1.) The file/program is damaged or has become corrupted somehow. I've redownloaded FNIS from Nexus Mods and redownloaded Skyrim from Steam. This can't be it. 2.) The program was encrypted/signed with a digital certificate and something has gone wrong with that certificate/encryption. IE: The certificate has expired. Can't be this or everyone would be having this error. 3.) Libraries the program relies upon (usually DLLs in Windows) are missing or corrupted. Essentially those libraries are part of the program and without them the program is incomplete. IE: Not a valid Win32 application because part of it is missing or corrupted. I have already reinstalled the .Net 3.5 Framework required by FNIS as well as updated/installed all the MS Visual C++ libraries. (The C++ libraries seems to have fixed the regular version of FNIS but not the XXL version.) I've checked everything except the libraries included with a standard install of Windows 10. Start, search for cmd, right click command prompt, Run as Administrator: sfc.exe /scannow Found corrupted files but couldn't fix them? Great... BOTH copies of files are damaged/corrupted? In the same command line prompt: dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth Will verify your local backup copies of Windows files matches those found on Microsoft's servers. It completes successfully and I run the command from before. sfc.exe /scannow Finds corrupted files but can now replace them with the clean copies in the local backup we just got with the previous command. The changes will take effect on next reboot. Rebooted. FNIS for Users XXL now runs as expected. . . . Thanks Windows... That was awesome... ?☹️ Back to enjoying the new animations I started installing almost THIRTY HOURS AGO! Fixed. I hope...
Sgt. Marge Posted May 17, 2021 Posted May 17, 2021 Awesome! What an adventure you had in the world of Redmond, and you even defeated the final bOSs. Now on to Tamriel...
Neo37s Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 Everything was working fine until I was playing around with the Outfit Studio, made an outfit. I tried running FNIS but got an error(5). I looked at the staggerbehavior.xml file and went to properties. It is opened by Office XML Handler and says it was modified last night at 9:34pm. this is when I created the armor in Outfit studio. Have no idea what to do. Any help would be appreciated!

Looks like FNIS no longer has access permissions to that file. Did you run the Outfit Studio as a different user than what you are running FNIS as? IE: Did you run Outfit Studio as administrator and FNIS as a regular user? Windows file permissions can get odd on the C Drive. Who owns that file? Right click on it, Properties, Security tab.
Neo37s Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 no, I ran the Outfit studio like normal. I am the admin. I run FNIS when I open Vortex. This was my first attempt to make an edit to an armor. I tried deleting the I'm not even sure what stagger behavior is. I did go to the security tab and changed permissions so that all were given full access but to no avail. Same error. it's also a temp file and was created yesterday. Do you think I can just delete it?

Do you think I can just delete it? Quite possibly. Send it to the Recycle Bin and leave it there until you make sure everything is still working ok.
Neo37s Posted May 18, 2021 Posted May 18, 2021 That worked! I had to go into safe mode to delete it because it wouldn't delete. Stated that another program was using it. Thanks much!
