[Solved] FPS tanking after reloading into Tamriel Worldspace - HDT/SMP hair bugging out - use "smp reset" command

So... bit of a weird issue here.

My game usually runs fine at 60FPS, except for when I was in the Tamriel worldspace, going into some place, and back out after a while. Then there's a good chance my FPS in the Tamriel Worldspace will just tank to a crawl (<18 FPS). Going back inside, everything's dandy. Even saving, quitting to main menu and loading the save back into the overworld is usually fine and I get back to 60FPS.

I'm a bit confused as to what the issue may be. Loading into Tamriel worldspace first is fine. Big battles are fine. Crowds of NPCs are fine. Big open spaces are fine. Walking from Riften to Solitude is fine as long as I don't enter things.

Script Latency is usually around 80ms. Menuing or loading into a cell it spikes but not to the amount that it looses cycles.

FPS is steady at 60 unless the bug hits.

I noticed a huge cpu usage spike when the bug happens, it rockets to like 95%, otherwise sits comfortably around 50%. GPU usage is fine, and ram usage is about 4 - 5 gigs of ram (out of 32). So system specs are usually fine. No landscape texture overhauls aside from Verdant (manually reduced grass coverage), dyndolod and a mountain texture.

Also, heap management in Engine Fixes is on. I do not use ENB (or Enboost) at this time - I do have ReShade installed.

Savefile size is 9.6 mb with the skse file sitting at 1.5. That shouldn't qualify as bloat... Didn't change modlist in this 52 hours playthrough (so far) either.

I've had 1 instance of it happening indoors - Breezehome of all places. Going back out everything was back to normal.

In a few instances, the bug will correct itself after staying indoors again for a few minutes, but it's not guaranteed to solve the bug.

Frankly, I'm a bit stumped what could cause the issue, especially since it's not resulting in CTD.

On a different note - is there a fix for a poison effect (must be either spider or chaurus) stuck on screen? Currently I have to sisme 0 whenever I load into the game but it isn't a permanent solution. Couldn't get it cleared with the "erase imagespace modifiers" mod, and disabling radiant blur doesn't work either. € I've used this to clear my IMADs, so that one's fixed at least. :) Still appreciate anything towards to top issue.

To be perfectly honest, I've never even once monitored my FPS. (although I do monitor script lag from time to time - using Elephant's script lag tool - when I see evidence of slowdowns). Skyrim is unstable, and Skyrim's garbage collection system is iffy at best. And some mods or subtle mod conentions introduce unexpected problems,

PS> script lag blooms temporarily when  you enter chests, open inventory, while in console mode, while the map is opened, or quests, or MCMs, or while performing a cell change, etc.. That's to be expected, since Elephant pauses when those conditions are encountered. Ignore those spikes. They are absolutely meaningless. Elephant only works "correctly" when you are in game and fully in the world space (whether in or outdoor), not while the game is in a suspended state like those I noted above.

Sounds like HDT physics glitch.

Lots of scripts fire and hdt messes up on cell change.

Vsync enabled ?

It is application controlled and set to true.

What is weird is that it only happens in the Tamriel Worldspace. Not in hubs, cities, dungeons, pretty much nowhere else where you could encounter NPCs that could also be affected by this glitch. Is there a check I can run on the HDT physics?

I loaded the mod into the game and played like normal for about 15 minutes (someplace around solitude). I've made the same observations. Like I said, it's usually around 80ms, so should be good.

Yeah my script lag is generally reported around 70-80ms as well. (again, discounting the lag reported after exiting a menu or chest or whatever when Elephant's ability to read the game timer is also suspended during use of those resources).

Personally, (and no offense intended) I think some folks spend way too much time worrying about hitting "60FPS!!!" and believe people should stop relying on measuring FPS and use an experiential measure instead, but that's just me. I doubt I get anywhere near 60FPS, and when it drops enough that I can see a problem (staggered frames,) I go inside for a while and let the game catch up.

And when I decide I'm going to spend a lot of time outdoors, I make sure to save every ~20-30 minutes or so because at this point I expect a CTD on long duration outdoor play, especially in areas like the wilds between Whiterun and Rorikstead, where there is a significant animal population.

In worldspace you all those creatures which might cause a spike.

Try this, remove all hdt stuff, console  and smp reset.

The change cell into tamriel.

Next pcb (purge cell buffer)

Just to narrow down what causes this.

And try setting Vsync manually on, application controlled might get overwritten by some settings.

Should have clarified. Vsync is turned on in game settings, and set to "application controlled" in Nvidia inspector.

What speaks against HDT is that it works fine in city hubs and I'd expect it to bug out there a lot more than I would outside. Testing this is gonna be a b... ;)

€ Can confirm. When the issues started I used "smp reset" and things went back to smooth. Guess I'll have to get rid of smp hair and then check if the issue still persists. Using hdt and cbc for the rest.

You don't need to get rid of SMP/HDT hair or clothing/armor. For those, the fix when they go awry is as simple as unequipping then re-equipping the item,

Not so easy with hair. ;) But the command above will reset as well. It's quite useful info for subsequent playthroughs however.
