Oblivion.exe - Bad Image

Hello! I recently acquired the Oblivion game of the year edition.

So far I updated it to the latest Official patch, the latest unofficial patch, I installed the latest OBSE and the latest pluggy.

I also installed a lot of mods, but Im doubting that they play a role here, however I put my load order here too, as soon as I figure out how that works.

However, I am getting an error at the very moment I launch/double-click oblivion, be it via its original exe or the obse launcher. So the game doesnt even start up

I have applied the 4gb patch to it, however the safety copy I made doesnt run either.

The error that is displayed is

"Oblivion.exe - Bad Image

C:\Windows\system32\d3dx9_27.dll is either not designed to run on Windows or it contains an error try installing the program again blablabla "

Google didnt help :(

Try replacing the exe with the one from the disc and see if that works.

If you have the steam version then you did not need to do any updates and you need to use a special 4GB patch that can be found on the OBSE main page.

What OS and what bit (32 or 62) are you running?

Also did you install the game to the default location (program files directory)?  If you did and you are running Vista or later then you need to uninstall and reinstall the game outside of the program files directory.  UAC and permissions issues are going to give you random fits if you don't.

Ive tried replacing with the disc one as well, didnt work.

No steam version.

I am running Win 7 on 64bit.

I installed it to M:\Program files (x86)\Oblivion  Is that bad? D:

You mean "C" not M right?

If it is in the C:\Program Files directory then yes that is bad.

Windows has built-in UAC and permissions protocols that can hamper you from installing mods and getting them to work correctly.

I suggest reinstalling to something like:

C:\Games\Oblivion

or even installing to a different hard drive if you have one.  Your call.

Ok, if that is the case then you should be fine.

It was confusing because you listed Program files (x86) as part of your path which didn't make much sense to me. :P

If the game won't launch then you probably will have to reinstall it again.  Additionally, you should NOT need any "official" patches if you are running the game of the year version, as it comes already patched.

The unofficial patches are a good idea if you are not using OOO or FCOM.

I fixed it.

At first I tried going to the file it named, delete it and then re-install directx.

Namely C:\Windows\System32\d3dx9_27.dll

But it still didnt work

However I forgot that it was Microsoft that made Windows and directx.

When I searched for the file before via search, it showed me 2.

So I went and deleted the second one in c:\windows\SysWOW64\ and re-installed directx once again.

It now works perfectly, thank you very much for your help regardless :)
