If I'm not mistaken, animations for weapons are "static" animations contained within the nif, right?

 

Animations for AAF are different because they manipulate the character skeleton instead of directly moving the mesh parts around. The character meshes (body and equipment) are "weighted" to follow the character skeleton "bones" around. And that creates the animations you see.

 

It's not too difficult to make animations once you have the right tools in place. But, the tool setup is a little tricky. Especially now because it requires a specific version of HavokContentTools that only works on versions 2014 through 2016 of 3DSMax.
