roflcopter66 Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 It's like there's a 10ft bubble around my character. Inside this bubble, the shadows are nice and crisp. But anything further than 10ft and the shadows are a blurry, low resolution mess. I tried changing a bunch of shadow-related ini settings to no avail. I also tried enabling and disabling reshade and enb but the issue persists. I even tried using the launcher and changing between the shadow quality presets such as Medium and Ultra. Here's what I gathered: Increasing shadow distance (tried many values from 500 to 3000 to 7000 to 21000) only extends the range of the blurry shadows; it doesn't affect the range of this 10ft 'high quality' bubble. Increasing shadow resolution only affects the close shadows, a.k.a. the inside of the 10ft 'high quality' bubble. Anything beyond 10ft is super low res, no matter how high I set the shadow resolution. Apparently, the issue is the distance in which the game changes from quality shadows to ugly shadows. Must be some sort of shadow LOD setting. I imagine there'd be two ways to solve the problem; increase the range of this 'close shadows' bubble from 10ft to 20ft or whatever, or increase the quality of the shadows outside the bubble. It really is just too low, and the pop-in is too noticeable when you're moving. The attached screenshots show what happens once I get closer, they suddenly change from low quality to high quality. Please help, this is killing me lol

But that's all the more reason I wanted to make things look nice now that I finally can! Goddamn Bethesda
Guest Posted January 5, 2021 Posted January 5, 2021 Guide:Fallout4Prefs INI/Display - STEP Modding Wiki (step-project.com) Ton of shadow settings there you can try. The game is treating shadows kinda like LOD. I think adjusting the fBlendSplitDirShadow value can fix this. Try something high like between 1000 and 2000 or just double the vanilla value till you can stand the eye sore. Careful upping it too much might eat FPS.

The link isn't very helpful, it doesn't elaborate on most variables. Skyrim is much better documented than FO4 in this regard. I googled some more and found that increasing the value of "fBlendSplitDirShadow" helps a bit. It makes the transition between LODs a bit smoother, so the pop-in isn't as jarring. However it really seems impossible to change the shadow LOD distance and/or detail. Must be an engine limitation, and we can't really do anything about it. It's a shame.
