Kerbal Space Program

I was honestly kinda shocked to not see a thread about this game.

To sum it up, Kerbal Space Program is more or less a sim where you operate your own space program.

Right now it's heavily in development, at version 0.19, so it's still pretty early in. The most recent additions are atmospheric effects such as re-entry fire anf contrails as well as rover parts, and previously parts for unmanned spacecraft were released.

They're taking an approach very similar to how Minecraft did it, releasing a very early beta or even alpha for purchase, and adding on as it goes, so early adopters naturally get a better price.

Since it's so early the only game modes out right now are sandbox, a few scenarios such as a moon, or Mun as it's called i nthis game, landing, and training. Plus there are a few buildings open for use. Vehicle assembly, for building rockets, the Space Plane hangar, for building, well, planes, and the tracking station for keeping track of your currently active vehicles. All parts are avaialble in all buildings, so if you want to build a rocket powered aitplane, go for it. Want to attempt a traditional style space shuttle, go nuts. Want to build a strange multi staged hybrid airplane rocket thingy no being with a shred of sanity would ever attempt to pilot, by all means, build it.

The game also sports a complete home planet, multiple planets in the Kerbol system, including moons, and all of them can be landed on and explored and each has easter eggs to be found. That's right, a FULL FREAKIN PLANETARY SYSTEM out there to explore. Each planet and moon you see it full size and can be landed on and sped around on.

It does have a free demo to try the game on the main site, as well as a site just for hosting mods, and people have gone crazy with mods.

The first of the best video series showing off the craziness you can pull off in this game if you get creative and a bit sadistic.

Aww hell, why not post the second where it gets really nuts

Yea it's a slow day :s

As for the game , I had seen a video from it a couple of weeks back and it seemed fun but the people playing it were just unbearable , and 23 $ seems a bit expensive for an alpha game , I mean Arma III is 30

Well the good thing is that it's not multiplayer and far as I've seen there are no plans to ever add multiplayer since that opens up a whole new PAndora's box.

It's a fucking awesome game! I have to actually try and work on an actual rocket at some point... but but... I want to get my space wheel of fire into orbit. So I can have my orbital carousel. :D

... I have yet to succeed. T_T

It's been completely redesigned since this, but still. Screenshots!

That is some fine mad rocket science there.

I admti the most I've ever done is up and down trips, though yesterday I put Jebideiah Kerman in orbit, that is orbint around the sun. I was in super fast wapr for over an hour before I gave up on him returning home.

That's the great thing about KSP. It's both complex, and simple. You can do whatever you want. If you want to slap together some basic rocket, with only a limited understanding of how it all works, you can. If you want to put together an insane rocket with all sorts of number crunches and calculations, you can! If you want to make a "Real" rocket, and try and play the game the "Real" way, with just basic "slap it together until it works" you can. Or you can get super complex and complicated and crunch numbers and calculations and make missions and go all over the solar system!

I'm still on the first of those. XD Not complaining the the slightest.

You know, maybe there should be some more indie game threads opened up here. I know I've certainly been finding some awesome ones lately, that I've been either playing (Don't Starve) or keeping my eye on. (Starforge)

Guess I could open up threads for those. Never hurts to get indie games more exposure. ... maybe later.

Wouldn't be a bad idea.

Heh, and I took to making spiral rockets. It' a rocket I launch at an angle, and it has wings o nit angled ot make it spiral. It gets a nice stable flight.

I had the same idea! heh... though mine was slightly more extreme. :3 Less practical though, hah. Yours actually makes sense. Use the buttons that let you angle the rockets slightly, and have the ROCKETS be angled in a circle. I call it the "Drill rocket." ^^ Still just an idea in my head. I'll have to try building it one day.

And stable during vertical flight only? It seems like attempting to level it out and achieve orbit would be a bitch.

I did something somewhat similar with the Staputnik probe and a bunch fo those micro thrusters. A strange result was on it's way up the probe went poof and all 16 micro thrusters flew high i nthe sky, then rain back down like a bunch of bombs.

Oh, that reminds me. I want to try and make some sort of thing that can actually launch missiles, using decouplers and clever staging. :) Should be fun. Hmm, might have to build a big target in the space plane hanger first.

I haven't done much with micro thrusters. Haven't done much "micro" building at all. XD I'll have to give them a try. :) OH OH OH! The missile that is launched, can have micro thrusters also attached to decouplers, so it can be like a scatter missle! :D

You'll definitely want the engines to fire before you decouple, otherwise you just get a bomb

As long as I can still download it just stand alone. :\ Nothing is more frustrating than "hmm, I think I'm going to buy, and support this indie game! ... what do you mean I can only get it on steam or on that google wallet... thing? Just let me buy the damn game from you."

The KSP team has already stated that both options will remain open. Personally, I plan to get a Steam key ASAP so I don't have to worry on updates.
