Does anyone else use NMM? I'd like to know more about profiles.

Pretty much title, I use NMM. Love it, haven't had a problem with it. Used to use Mod Organizer, but I could never get into it's layout and formatting.

NMM has a profile setup. I don't entirely know what this means, I've never used it. Albeit NMM is laggy, I'm afraid to attempt what I think the profiles do...which is change the mod lists based on profiles for your game...I don't know if I trust it. Anyone have any experience with this?

It's a system that works, sometimes it doesn't. It's meant for different playstyles on the same games without blowing up your load order. It's slow, and sometimes freezes which screws up the installation and you'll have reactivate and deactivate mods manually. But I've only encountered that issue rarely. It mainly has to do with how different each load order is per profile. I'd say use it, but use with caution.

I used to use NMM a long time ago, it was kinda buggy, and the profiles pretty much uninstalled and reinstalled the mods when switching between them, if I remember correctly, or maybe that's just a bug I had. Either way, I use Vortex now, which is decent. It sure is faster than NMM and more reliable...

Move to MO2 or Vortex.  NMM is dead.  Very dead.  Deader than the deadest, dead zombie in TWD.  I use Vortex and it works great.  Read the install instructions like anything else, follow the guides!  Profiles work great. Move into the new age :)

AHHH I want to believe me, but my brain is so trained in the arts of NMM that I'm still extremely hesitant. Based on what some of you have said about profiles being buggy, I'm still hesitant to stay and explore with NMM as well.

Either way, you mention Vortex but I don't know like...  can I import my current list and load orders and what not? Or do I have to spend 2 days to redo everything?

No idea - I haven't used NMM in forever!  Was using MO until I needed a 64bit mod manager, then I switched to Vortex.  As it is Nexus' new manager and effectively replaces NMM, I don't have a reason to look back.  I never used MO2 so cannot comment, but Vortex is developed by Tannin42 who created MO/MO2 in the first place, only he now works for Nexus.

I used NMM in the past, thinking "Why should I switch to MO2? Everyone is talking about it like it's a huge thing". Then I tried creating profiles, and everything went down. NMM crashed, I had to manually enable my mods back, and it was overhaul a big mess.

I decided to give MO2 a go. I was on a harddrive back then so creating the virtual folder used to take me a solid 10 seconds. However, MO2 allows you to install the mods outside the data folder of skyrim which is good for mainly one reason: Overrides. Before with NMM I'd just "Override everything" and never think back about what I'd just done. Now, I can monitor every single override and decide which mod overrides what.

Since the mods aren't in the data folder, but rather in their own separate folder, switching profiles is just a matter of disabling or enabling which folders will get loaded into the virtual folder. NMM used to actually move files around which was costly, especially on a hard drive.

I tried Vortex but it looked like a glorified NMM which didn't manage overrides either. Maybe it's different now, but imo there's no reason to use anything other than MO2.

Vortex is a bit of mess when it comes to checking your mod list but its faster and easier to play Skyrim with

It handles Overrides with a basic rule system , has some neat QoL features like Purge Mods or run LOOT and FNIS automatically whenever you enable or disable mods (altough the purge thing is redunant for MO2 users as MO2 doesnt touch the skyrim folder so its always "purged")

I dont really get all the hate about Vortex. It does what its supposed to do

If youre not working with mods or swap profiles every 2 hours Id always recommend Vortex over MO2. Vortex is faster and easier to use in terms of actual "playing experience"

MO2 can be a mess to configure and has more issues than Vortex when setting up some programs (even basic ones like FNIS). The only thing that makes MO2 worth using over Vortex is when you work with mods and/or use a lot of profiles

The Override folder is a blessing if you do a lot of things inside the CK, Bodyslide or TES5Edit as it allows you to easily backup your data. With Vortex youd have to go into your Skyrim Data Folder and search out the data you created and copy it into a seperate folder.. which can be quite messy depending on how many mods you have. If youre not making a lot of use of that Override Folder, there isnt really a reason to use MO2 over Vortex - other than personal preference and the "swapping profiles with MO2 is 1 click, whereas in Vortex its a 2min process"
