can't drag zipped files to mod manager

So, I got a new computer today, and I've spent most of the day installing mods. I've been using 7zip and dragging them into the mod manager as usual, no problem. Suddenly it's putting everything I download into a temp folder and won't let me drag them into the mod manager. I even broke down and bought winzip, because that's what I've always used. Still won't let me drag them into the mod manager. Anybody have any idea what's wrong?

Try converting the zip to .7z  (unzip then rezip using 7zip and use the native format for the utility) 

 

I recall reading something somewhere that suggested zip files are problematic. Don't recall the logic just the gist.
