willloudermill Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 for those of u who dont know there is an epic mod called merp, and wb has pretty much forbidden them to release it cuz its like the best lotr thing made so for gaming wise, sign the pettition to help the mod become able for download go check it out http://www.moddb.com/mods/merp-middle-earth-roleplaying-project/#3575955
lizard_wizard Posted February 15, 2013 Posted February 15, 2013 A lot has happened since the petition. WB got sued by Tolkien Estates and if they lose, they won't have any power over MERP team.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 If you loose, pubicly cease work, then just release the mod via torrents and claim it was done by someone w/o the teams permission. As for the lawsuit, as long as the mod team is not monetizing their work, and uses assets they made themselves, their lawsuit is groundless. But yeah this whole issue is rather stupid, I mean hell they could just as easily do a deal with bethesda and the mod team to make this an officially sanctioned project, and make fucktons of money for everyone concerned.
Katsoro Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 @Kashiwaba Tomoe True WB would make lots of money if they did that but they would have to share it and WB DOSE NOT SHARE MONEY. At lest thats what it looks like.
Kashiwaba Tomoe Posted February 17, 2013 Posted February 17, 2013 Well even if they win, they loose, because this is the sort of thing that pisses off fan bases immensely.
Emily Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 This should be good. those are indie mod project right. Shouldn't be a problem if it goes non-profit.
Curseddonut Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 My guess is that the petition wont succeed. I dont see Warner Bros caring about their Customers over something like this.
Veta Posted February 24, 2013 Posted February 24, 2013 Even if it goes non profit people who didn't buy skyrim will buy it for LORT which is a loss for them .
lollol Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Does this mean that modders could be sued for stuff like Sauron's mace, armor, LOTR swords, anything related to an IP?
gregathit Posted March 10, 2013 Posted March 10, 2013 Potentially yes, however they won't be. While WB may have fairly deep pockets, they don't have pockets deep enough to go after a bunch of tiny armor or weapon mods.
lollol Posted March 25, 2013 Posted March 25, 2013 Does WB control licensing rights to lord of the rings and not the tolkien estate? For example are they hypothetically able to grant rights to another company to make and release official lord of the rings games? Did the tolkien estate completely sell lotr to WB(retain only royalties, no control)?
