Hello everyone, so I just came back to skyrim after a long break and I have a few questions.

1) First of all, I was using NMM at the time and from what I understand it's not supported anymore and there's a new manager called Vortex. The problem is that apparently you have to reinstall all the mods, and I have 150+ including 60-70 from Loverslab. Some of them are quite annoying to install like ENB or mods that require a lot of in-game configuration. There's also MO (mod organiser) that a lot of people recommended back in the day but I never really bothered to look into it.

So if you're familiar with these mod managers: Is it worth it to move to one of those, does it actually provide anything useful/better than NMM ?

If so, which one is better, Vortex or MO?

2)I was also playing on the old skyrim at the time and now there's Special Edition, so I was wondering if I have to reinstall my mods anyway maybe I should get SE as well?

From what I understand SE is the same game but with a graphics upgrade, but that seems useless considering you can already have great graphics in the original skyrim using ENB mods. My second concern is that there seems to be way more mods available for the original skyrim compared to SE: 60K files for Skyrim and 20K for SE on the Nexus. That is important because I mainly play for the mods, especially Loverslab mods, and not the game itself. But I guess it's possible that a lot of the additional mods for old Skyrim are just niche mods like some random companions and the main mods required to enjoy the game do have a SE equivalent?

So for those who use SE, do you think it's worth to get it? Is there any improvement over the old Skyrim that I don't know about?

It's not enough to vote. Let me explain.

NMM is still COMMUNITY supported and the latest version is available here:

https://github.com/Nexus-Mods/Nexus-Mod-Manager/releases

The most recent update has been within the last month, so it is not languishing in Oblivion. NMM is the simplest of the mod managers, the one most like doing it manually. The flip side of that is that it doesn't have a lot of the function that can be found in MO and Vortex. Like so much, it's your choice as to what matters to you.

SE is the 64 bit version of Skyrim. In the sense that it has all the same characters and quests in the vanilla game they are the same game. Technically, however, they are not. A good way to break your game is to use mods made for LE in SE and vice versa. So, you have to make the choice. While SE is supposed to be more stable (reading the technical threads I have doubts about this but that's the real advantage if it exists). It does require less work to make a modded game stable. On the other hand, many of the LE mods are not yet available for SE although this is becoming less of an issue every day.

Thanks a lot for your help!

So according to the vote most people recommended MO, I'll try to install it and see how it works (there must be some sort of tutorial somewhere) and if it's way too complicated I'll stick with NMM.

As for SE a large majority seems to agree that it's useless, so no debate there I guess I'll stay on old skyrim. What do you mean exactly by "It does require less work to make a modded game stable"? Is there significantly less conflicts between mods, game crashes, etc?

If you look at my blog on CTDs (found in my signature below by opening the spoiler entitled "My Stuff") you will find that I recommend using several "mods" in order to make your Skyrim LE game more stable. Equivalently for SE there are only two (the Engine Fixes and Bethini). If you do these properly both games are very stable (if you don't make some other mistake (like the one I mentioned earlier using SE mods on LE and vice versa).

I agree SE does not have all of the mods LE does. But you also Technically cannot run out of memory in SE, i'm running over 400 mods in SE (yes a few are LE that work directly to SE) Skeletons is one such mod. YouTube look for a channel called gamerspoets MO2 install he does a great job guiding you through all the aspects of MO2 and how to install pretty much everything and associate with nexus to direct download.

Hi, I'm using MO currently and all I can say is that MO is the superior mod organiser as long as you spend some time on it. MO provides you w/ lots of control over your mods (which mod gets to overwrite which regardless of the installation order). Vortex is very Nexus friendly. Really, you just hit the "download with Vortex"  and it'll install the mod and activate it for you which also makes it easy to pick up for new users.

Your question regarding SSE or Classic Skyrim. Here's my two cents. SSE is more stable with it's 64 bit application as it now utilises your system resources better so it's a better choice for long term (The Elder Scrolls VI still seems to be in a distant future). One thing to keep in mind is that Bethesda still updates SSE w/ Creation Club every so often, which means that it will likely break SKSE64, which sucks ... a lot.

OK thanks, I will look into it before installing anything.

I don't really know how the memory thing works, is there some sort of limit on the amount of modded content that you can have simultaneously?

I already found a tutorial for MO but I guess I'll look over this one as well just in case.

Yeah, MO looks complicated at first but I assume you get used to it with some practice. I am already familiar with installing mods manually so not having the one-click install shouldn't be a big deal.

I did see some modders say that they will be working only on SE in the future, and it kinda makes sense that a more modern game would be more stable. I guess I'll go over my current mods to see if at least the most important ones have a SE version before making a decision.

Err, a bit wrong there.

unless you are packing exabytes of memory no, you don't run out of memory. 32 bit memory (LE) limits you to just under 4gig TOTAL available memory out of the box. 64 bit limits you to 18 exabytes out of the box. Yes some extenders for LE make it access more memory, but that's like putting a turbo on a model T. SE was redone in the basic programming to allow it to access as much ram as you allow it (funny considering they didn't fix any of the bugs) , be it 8 gig, 16, 32, or 64 or 128 gig. In that respect SE is just more stable. It doesn't have as many mods but neither did LE just a couple of years after release compared to morrowind.

@Frozyall this just means that if you're running a 64 bit program (se) you can run far more non esp mods than you can with a 32 bit program LE. non esp is usually things like textures and sounds. you are still limited on 255 esp flags but there are ways around that.

As far as creation club and updating, go into your steam and shut off updating for skyrim. as long as you never launch from steam again and you make sure steam is running before you click nmm, vortex, or MO2, no troubles.

@Grey CloudI'm curious as to how i'm wrong rather than just a YER WRONG post...

check this list

conversion thread

and for a well looking skyrim you can follow this it will not have everything you currently have and quite a bit more in the looks department. (lots of 2k and 4k textures)

I was just thinking more in terms of bad configuration (ini files?). And as Psalam has pointed out, the SE tech support thread is alive and kicking.

I think most of them are people who are new and as you have stated don't read the mod requirements or add mods that don't like each other. So then people such as yourself try to diagnose a problem that could have been avoided if they slowed down and took it a to b to c rather than c to z to a.

It's the dangly bits. Once they see them it is game-over in the thinking department. ?

Well a lot of mods have textures so I guess that's pretty useful.

OK I'll disable updates then, those mods are bad anyway compared to Nexus and Loversalab.

Thanks, I will look into it. If I understand correctly the goal of the conversion thread is to "convert" an existing old skyrim save and then continue to play with it in SE? I don't think I wanna do that, sounds way too complicated. I'd rather start with a brand new save in SE.

The second thread is very useful, I guess what I'll do is that I will install SE and MO, copy this list, delete the optional mods that I don't want, look for every single SE mod that I want and that is not in the list already, insert those mods  in their appropriate categories, post this new list somewhere in the forum so that people can check if there's anythyng wrong, and then I just have to install the mods in the order of the list with MO, open the game and everything will work perfectly. Sounds easy on paper...

No, it is about keeping track of which mods have been converted to work in SE and any issues which arise from this.

as the second thread states. do not use LOOT to sort them, they are already presorted i have maybe half to 3/4 of the mods on that list and several that are not simply because of things like deadly drain is stable (mostly) but that mostly thing is what kills it. i also use a couple of different race mods (2 are by trykz) and a few clothing mods (sun jeong) that are not on the list. as long as you take your time and think about what mods you have and want then its easier than just loading a ton of mods and flipping a switch (new games takes me about 30 minutes for all the mods to load hence live another life being one that is needed) here is my complete load order (according to LOOT).

Well a lot of mods have textures so I guess that's pretty useful.

OK I'll disable updates then, those mods are bad anyway compared to Nexus and Loversalab.

There is a tutorial on how to grab CK mods into MO2 and never update them again since the skyrim CK (as far as i know) is still free. simply put you open the CK and pick the mod {while running it through MO2} let the CK download it. MO2 puts it into the overwrite folder. exit skyrim and your overwrite folder has new stuff in it, right click overwrite >create mod> name it what the mod is and boom. open skyrim back up, go back into the CK and unsub the original mod, then it no longer tries to keep that mod updated, and you have a nice new mod. unfortunately that means the mod author doesn't get the sub from it.
