Display/Lighting/ENB Issue

Hello everybody,

 

I have a weird problem that usually occurs when standing near light sources like fires or candles. It has been going on for quite some time now and I wasn't able to find any solutions online yet.

After starting a new playthrough and constantly experiencing this issue I was getting annoyed and started trying to find a solution. 

In the screenshots you can see my screen getting noticably darker and a bit blurry just by turning to the left for a tiny amount (I can guarantee that is not caused by some effect of the collar my character was wearing in the screenshot it was merely coincidence that Nocturnal felt like punishing my character in that instant ?).

Here are my findings regarding this problem until now:

- As mentioned before it happens around light sources like fire, candles, etc. but I'm fine as long as I'm not standing next to any light sources

- It is not caused by all lightsources. Some lights like lightning from spells or the sun do not cause this problem for some reason (I will do more testing if required & requested)

- Usually I only encounter this problem when looking in a particular direction around light sources (like in the screenshot), which bothers me alot especially in dungeons where I am surrounded by torches and candles and can't find an angle where it's not looking this dark and blurry

- I tried uninstalling my ENB (K ENB) and the problem went away

- I tried disabling effects in enbseries.ini but they don't seem to contribute to the problem (even bloom or dof). When disabling all affects at once my screen goes black and I can't see anything. I don't know if this behaviour was intended by the creator of K ENB or if it is part of the problem

- I reinstalled K ENB and switched to the quality and performance options but the problem persists

- I manually disabled all kinds of AA in the NVIDIA Control Panel but the problem persists

- I disabled dof in skyrimprefs.ini but the problem persists

- I updated to the latest version of ENB (0.389) as of writing this post but the problem persists

- For some reason my loading screen is so dark that I can't see any of the loading screen models (don't know if that is related, although removing the ENB fixed that as well)

- To my knowledge I don't have any other lighting mods installed because the ENB description said that could cause problems (my mod list is years old so the problem could lie in there)

I hope the information I gathered is in any way helpful and someone with more experience is able to at least make a guess to what might be casuing this problem.

Remove any use of gray, grain, and dithering in the enb fx including main, pre, and postpass files, use Kyo's configs in each of those files to match the effects resolution exactly to your ACTUAL resolution, no downsampling or oversampling.

 

Kyo has these code modules very clearly marked, very easy to find.

 

NLA and K are incompatible. NLA uses grain and tonemap dithering, K uses 4000 kinds of sampling and runs almost everything through the bloom control code to create a type of "AA" and image softening. They have COMPLETELY different weather systems from each mod. They aren't compatible. Either use NLA or K's weather files in the enbseries folder. Pick one.

Removed NLA, but it sadly didn't fix anything.

I did find the resolution parts in enbeffectprepass.fx and enbsunsprite.fx and fixed them according to Kyo's installation guide. Sadly I know nothing about how the ENB files actually work and my coding knowledge is very basic. So the only way to check for any gray scaling, grain and dithering I could think of was ctrl + f-ing those three in enbeffect.fx, enbeffectprepass.fx and enbsunsprite.fx.

For gray scaling I couldn't find any variable that I could set to false or 0 in any of the aforementioned files and I didn't want to change any of the algorithms without knowing what I'm doing.

Grain was disabled or there were no toggleable variables in those files.

I was able to find several DitherEnable variables in enbeffectprepass.fx and enbsunsprite.fx and they were all set to false.

 

I don't really know what I'm doing and if those were even the right files to search but nothing I did changed anything.

check to see if dawn and dusk are enabled in the main enbseries files.

 

For K there is no enabling or disabling dithering, they are hard enabled by default, you need to set the amounts to 0, again Kyo has marked these settings, read his commentation (the // areas) to find them.

I searched the files for gray, and grain and changed any numeric constant i could find to 0.

No luck with dithering though. I couldn't find any values for that.

And the gray and grain changes didn't help.

Also, I just saw that Kyo has multiple ENB's. I'm using Pure Light.

Pure is the only one I've ever used and as you can see by the screenshot, turning gray/grain off setting and set dithering is 0 is entirely doable.

 

That shot is over a year old, so I can't send you the changes I made, but it's entirely doable, and Kyo does provide the documentation to do it, you're just gonna have to start doing some reading. Since dead end thrills' owner went all hyper SJW koolaid, the main thread for tweaking his stuff is gone, so nexus is probably you're best bet out of contacting him directly.
