Rectangles/Squares in Place of Text

So I started up a new game and was making my way through a dungeon when I found a pair of leather boots. Problem is said boots didn't have the name on them and instead were labeled with just squares where the text should be. At first I thought perhaps these weren't the leather boots after all but a pair added by a mod, but upon looking at the base id they are in fact the vanilla leather boots. Trying to search leather boots with the console "help 4" command also did not yield the titular boots. A few pairs of enchanted leather boots showed up and a mod-added "aged" version but no plain vanilla leather boots. Some Googling revealed this issue has plagued others and usually with more than one item. Thus far I haven't noticed anything else but I'm sure there probably are other items impacted. One suggest fix was to delete the fontconfig.txt, fonts_en.swf, and a few others but I cannot find any of these files in my game's folder except the Translate_ENGLISH.txt file. I tried replacing this file with a backup copy from the vanilla game but it had no impact.

Edit: When selecting the boots with the console open I noticed that it states Skyrim.esm defines the object but locate is unknown.

What you describe is usually the result of the wrong script (alpha-numeric characters). Chinese/Japanese/Korean and Cyrillic scripts will cause it. Maybe you have a mod from one of these countries?

A pair of leather boots will always have the same ID regardless of what mod the meshes and textures come from.

Not quite the same but I have a mod which makes some of the potions show Portuguese names. I used to have something which made Warmaiden's and the Drunken Huntsman show in German.

Alright so if I was going to go through and try to find the culprit would I need to completely uninstall mods or would unticking the esp be enough? I ask because I'm using around 200 mods and uninstalling and reinstalling would be a bit of a nightmare, lol.

EDIT: Never mind, figured it out. Apparently it was an armor mod I had installed that added Ciri's DLC armor from the Witcher series. For some reason that mod's .esp edited the vanilla leather armor and boots. No idea why it did this but after removing the edits using TES5Edit everything seems to be fine now.
