Can't you use mstsc.exe in the Windows\System32 directory (I use win7 so I'm assuming it's still in Win10 if you use it). I'm assuming you're trying to connect to the server.

It's what I use and I've not had any problems with Win2012 servers

what do i have to do on the win2012 server? i'm assuming i have to config something on that server for accepting connections?

Yes you will have to allow rdp else it will refuse connections.

I only admin an Oracle Db on a 2012 server so I don't know the ins and outs of setting it up, but I assume it will be in the management section and may need to be set in the roles as well.

Sorry I can't be more help on the setup

i was following this tutorial RDP Setup

during the install i got a microsfot message saying that rdp will be available for 60 day trial and that i can buy license. i had no idea rdp needed a license. i thought it came with server 2012 r2 as a feature.

Well is does sounds pretty strange as how are you supposed to connect without using rdp.

It's not a license to rdp *from* the server, rather than *to* it, is it?

If I get a moment I'll ask one of the server admins at works, last time I admin'd a box was a few years ago for 2008. I do DBA stuff now

@hogsmaws

I managed to ask someone about this. Basically if you just installed Core or the full install you should be able to rdp onto the server with no problem.

However if you have also installed RDS to use it as a terminal server then you do apparently need a license (I would assume like a CAL)

Hope this is of some help

I got it working. I didn't have to setup a rdp server. I just had to enable remote connections on the server... duh. i'm a dummy

thanks though
