[UE4] Krasue's development thread (WIPs/Discussion)

(LONG POST INCOMING - I’m sorry if this is the wrong place for this kind of post)

Hello, I've recently decided to enter into the realm of adult video games. I am quite experienced with Unreal Engine and have a history of 3D Character Art and Animation amongst other things. UE4 is by far the best and easiest engine to use for someone without that much programming experience and from the numerous tests I've done, making just about any kind of game is possible for me given the time.

With that out of the way, let's get into what this thread is all about. I'll leave a TL;DR at the end in case the wall of incoming text is a bit too much. First of all, I have many ideas for games that I want to make. Probably too many, and being the indecisive person I am, I have yet to make any real commitment to any one of those ideas outside of a prototype/vertical slice. I'll post some gifs and images below of some of these tests. Essentially, I’d like to hear some feedback on my ideas and get some input on what to make.

I'm very interested in creating action games, mainly. Something akin to what we see in the AAA market but with more of an adult/sexual twist. Obviously not something as big as a AAA title, though. Among my tests, I have experimented with third person shooting and fighting games and have tried to recreate Doom 2016's Glory Kill system though instead of killing in first person we get a sex scene in first person (Might be good for a Doom parody).

The tests, prototypes and such are mainly playing grounds I used to experiment with features of all kinds, not just those of the adult game variety. Most of the tests were done with low poly and/or minimalist styles for quick iteration and implementation of animations and features. Most of these were made in very short spans of time.

(note: These are all very simplistic and unfinished. Far left is a test brawler, the middle is a "play as a monster" one and the far right is a test third-person shooter)

My interests for creating adult games are, as I've already stated, action games but also games of a darker theme. Among my interests are Monster girls (though of a more monstrous variety) Zako (Henchwomen) and horror games. There do exist quite a few Monster Girl games on the market, and while I love the cutesy girls seen in those games, I'm interested in seeing if a more monstrous take (Think Agony) would work. Horror games are also a given I feel as sex and horror tend to go hand in hand. Disregarding all the slasher films which feature sexual themes, games such as Silent Hill are great examples of mixing sexual themes with very disturbing imagery.

To make things cleaner for people reading this I'll simply list the ideas below. If you have thoughts on any of these ideas or would like to suggest something new, please do.

* Doom parody - Mentioned this above but Hellish imagery and demon girls. Maybe something similar to HDoom but closer to 2016 in visual style.

* Silent Hill/Resident Evil Horror game - Female character, exploration and game over scenes. This has actually been started but gameplay hasn't been 100% thought out. The girl at the top is from this one.

* Zako game - Pretty open on this one as I mainly just like the genre.

* TP Monster Girl game - As mentioned, something a bit darker than other MG girl games out there. Could potentially be merged with the Doom parody, minus the TP (Third Person) aspect.

One more thing I’d like to bring up is visual style. I’d like to think of myself as quite versatile in what I can make but there are upsides and downsides to each style. One of the ones I have grown quite fond of from the tests is 2000s era low poly but let me know if people would be into that sort of thing or not (Growing up with old video games may make me biased there).

* Realism - Upside is it can look great and the obvious downside is that it takes a lot of time etc. Also Hair is hell.

* Low Poly - Upside is that it’s quick and, I think, can have the same effect as pixel art in that the imagination fills out the detail. Downside is that it may be a harder sell.

* Stylized - Very broad but let’s say cartoony like Overwatch. Upside is that detail isn’t as important as definition. Downside is this can also take a lot of time, though obviously not as much as realism.

One of the last things I’d like to ask about is environments (graphically). How important are they to you? The reason I ask is because I’d like to focus more on things such as characters and animation rather than creating a fully detailed and realized world.

If you’ve managed to read this far, thank you so much. I know that a forum post this long is likely to cause eye-rolls and remarks about writing essays. The point of this thread is to open a discussion about this as I do not have many people to talk to about this specifically. This is all very new to me.

That’s all. Thank you again and I hope to hear from you soon.

TL;DR I know how to make games but need help deciding what kind of game to make and would like feedback as to what people want to see.

Also if by some chance you yourself are making a game and are in need of an Animator or 3D Character Artist, feel free to message me. I’d love to get to know more people in the scene.

It's always great to see professionals trying their hand at going solo and creating an adult game, I hope you will be able to make something of a higher quality than the amateur developers that make up the majority of the scene. With that said, I'll try and give some unbiased answers to the questions you have asked.

Doom Parody - This would be a pretty fun idea and you have the template for both gameplay and implementation of the sexual aspect. I think it's important to have a solid idea of how your game will be both a fun game and a good erotic experience, adult games often fail at one or even both of these aspects. Only issue with this idea is that you would need to be able to pull off fun FPS gameplay and it would require you to design a multitude of female enemies with various sex finisher animations so that it wouldn't become repetitive. Also, people may be put off by the nature of a game where you are both killing and fucking the women, even if they are demons/monsters.

SH/RE Style - This is also a good idea, but I feel like it would be hard to make as a solo developer as it would require a fair amount of environmental work to get the right atmosphere. Game over rape can be annoying, as it "rewards" you for losing rather than winning, but it can work if done right. This idea has good potential though and if that girl in your images was the protagonist of a 3rd person adult horror game then I would certainly play it.

Zako/Henchwomen - What style of game would this actually be? My only issue is this is a little obscure in terms of fetishes so it would need to be a really impressive game to become popular, but if you are passionate about it then that might improve your work.

Monster Girls - There are a lot of these, but it does sound like you want to make something different. I would say that there is a reason most of these games are "cutesy", it has wider appeal, if you want to go more "horror" with it then you may find a much smaller audience.

As for the graphical style:

Realism - Forget it. You can not do this solo, or even with a small team. Realism almost always looks bad unless you get it exactly right. Way too much effort.

Low Poly - You are right that it would be quick, you are also right that it would be a hard sell. This could be done successfully, but it would depend on how skilled you are at low poly art and just how low poly you go.

Stylised - There is no doubt in my mind that this is the way to go. Look at how much pornography exists of the Overwatch franchise, that is the style that any 3D adult game dev should be chasing right now, if they are able. I would also say that if you look at the highest earning Real-time 3D adult games, they tend to use something akin to this style. Wildlife, Monster Girl Island and Mahou Arms come to mind, if you haven't heard of those then look them up for some idea of graphical styles.

I hope my feedback is useful to you.

Overwatch looks shitty. Anything stylized looks either childish, or ugly and in any case anti-sexual.

And while we at it - I'm tired of artists and 3d artists who have neither basic knowledge of anatomy and proportions, nor taste to do something really erotic. Quadrillions of overexaggerated saggy boobs, huge fat asses, hips wider than shoulders and no waist, cause with too narrow shoulders and too wide hips there won't be any waistline - instead of an hour glass you get pear (no, it doesn't looks good at all). Too small heads, too big eyes (yeah, fuck anime).

Customization helps, but only as far, as limits goes. And if instead of a neutral default we already have pear shaped model there isn't many options left.

Thank you for replying. Your feedback really did help and I've had some further conversations with other people about the potential game. I will address the style first, though. I completely understand where you're coming from with Realism. Despite my experience in it, the time it would take to make a game in a realistic style would be colossal in comparison to the other two. Stylized is a very broad term but I think I may go with something with a visual style that gives me a good excuse not to care for every little detail in the environment. That being said, what kind of style or stylization I go with would be Dependant somewhat on the content of the game.

After some thinking, I do believe that the Doom Parody may be the way to go. Doom has a simple design but it also has one that's better for a solo developer. You work your way through mostly linear corridors to little battle arenas to fight against enemies. This is probably more achievable at this stage than, say, a fully open world game or a game reliant on exploration. I may be cutting off some people with the premise of a Doom parody that isn't a 3D HD version of HDoom but I'm hoping that I'll still find an audience with such an idea. That being said, the decision isn't final. I'll build a prototype and see how that goes first. In terms of putting people off... well, we'll see what happens.

I do still want to do the other ideas and flesh out some of them. But for now, I want to focus on something I can conceivably make by myself in a reasonable amount of time.

Can actually be converted into a good game. Check youtube for "HDOOM" mod. Cheap example, but from that idea good game can be done. Can be combined with RE style of gameplay. For example another than RE it self you can check "Haydee". As for style - vote for realism. It's already enough of 2d/pixelated/anime/etc. games. And only few that you can call "solid" 3D/UE4 mature games.
