Help making selected area semi-transparent with Gimp.

Have a texture .dds that's both metal and cloth. Trying to make the cloth areas semi-transparent, not invisible.

 

I've been Googling forever but all I can find is for whole image or full invisibility.

 

I did find something on using the eraser tool and turning down the opacity which appears to work in my Gimp viewport, but after saving and opening the nif, there is no change.

 

Yes I have a alpha channel and NiAlphaProperty and I have done a lot of selecting areas and making them invisible. I just cant figure out how to make outlined areas semi-transparent.

In gimp set opacity to something like 5 or 10 or whatever you want use the lasso tool to trace the area you want transparent then start erasing some then use the overwrite .dds file option and then open the nif in nifskope and right click the piece that you want to add transparency to and go to node - attach property - NiAlphaProperty. Now that spot should be transparent. Some colors the transparency is harder to see in nifskope.

That's exactly what I've been trying but any opacity below 95 is no change at all in nifskope, outfit studio or in the game itself. Above 95 will completely erase the texture and that will show just fine. I just can't get the see-through effect.

Post a copy of the nif and a copy of the unaltered texture file and I'll take a look.

I don't get it. Just tried a different area with a different color and now I'm getting complete invisibility with opacity 50-100 and no transparency at all below 50.

 

Anyways, hope the attachments go through. What I'm trying to make transparent are the blue cloth areas on the greaves, sleeves and skirt.

 

Wondering if possible there's something with my graphics card/settings or ENB...?

You have to delete out all of those NiAlphaProperty's being used in the nifs and reapply them.

 

This is after deleting out the old ones and adding new ones and Opacity was set at 20.

The reason why the transparency doesn't work is because some of the items have multiple layers stacked on top of each other so you have to alter the flags and thresholds to prevent pieces from becoming invisible as you can't have transparency stacked or the item under it will be invisible when it has NiAlphaProperty added.

 

Notice the skirt here with NiAlphaProperty added parts of the piece at the top of the skirt causes the skirt and other things under it to become invisible in that area. With and without altering NiAlphaProperty's flag and threshold.

You might have to separate the skirt into 2 pieces the skirt for one piece and then the skirt ornament for the other piece. Then once the skirt and skirt ornament have NiAlphaProperty added to them you can then alter the flag and threshold for the skirt ornament piece so that it doesn't cause the bottom part to become invisible and the skirt will also be transparent.

The mere mention of this site on that "main site for mods" gets you put under the chit hole, but when it comes to questions I always get an answer here where on there it's crickets or something smartass or just mostly useless all together.
