Sgt. Jenkins Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 So I've just encountered an...unusual bug. Basically, the skin textures I have downloaded for females in Skyrim randomly disappeared. I tried rearranging my mods, reinstalling the texture mod, and nothing seemed to work. Then I tried restoring a deleted save I'd just been playing where everything seemed fine. And all the skin textures came back. I could start a new game and all the textures looked exactly the way they were supposed to. I deleted the save file, and all the textures disappeared again. Every female character had that black covering that they get when textures aren't loading properly. And literally the only thing I changed was getting rid of a save file. Is this...I mean, how does this even happen? Is the game just failing to load things properly? I swear that sometimes my version of this game has a mind of its own.
Guest Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 I think black textures are vram issues (there is not enough video memory to load all the textures, so some turn to black or stay purple-ish). At least thats my experience. Are you sure you are not pushing your GPU to the limit? You could test vram usage (ex. https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/6491).
Sgt. Jenkins Posted September 26, 2018 Author Posted September 26, 2018 So, turns out it isn't the save file itself. Looks like if I try to start a new game from the main menu, I get the black textures. But if I load a save game first, then go to the main menu, and THEN start a new game, the textures are properly in place. It's possible I'm running out of VRAM while playing. I recently purchased a new gaming computer and only recently started trying to use Skyrim with it, but so far it's been giving me more grief than my old setup did. What's more, I can't seem to run ENB on this thing, as every time I put the d3d9.dll file into the Skyrim directory I can never manage to load a game, if I even make it to the main menu (and I've spent hours researching on how to troubleshoot the damn thing without much luck). I just find it strange that it was the same set of textures missing every time I tried starting up a game, and that the whole thing didn't just crash on me instead. *sigh* You know, if I'd never found this site and its mods I probably wouldn't even bother fighting with Skyrim this hard to make it work, lol.

So true, I've done a couple of full installations of Skyrim just for playing with a new mod version or release from here. About the d3d9.dll issue, do you have a directX version 9 installed? Check that and try to run the vram tool to see if you are reaching your vram limit or not. If you can't run the tool or prefer not to, try to use lower size resolution for some stuff.
Sgt. Jenkins Posted September 26, 2018 Author Posted September 26, 2018 Looks like I've currently got DirectX version 12 running. Do you think that could be the issue? From the research I've done it seems that d3d9 is somewhat...fussy, about how it runs.
Guest Posted September 26, 2018 Posted September 26, 2018 You need directX 9 for stuff like ENB, ENBs for Skyrim won't use DirectX 12 no matter what you do. It works with DirectX 9 (and I think directx 11 for the Special Edition ENBs). And it doesn't hurt to have both (or more) version installed.
Sgt. Jenkins Posted September 26, 2018 Author Posted September 26, 2018 Thanks for letting me know. I kind of wish that the couple dozen ENB guides and forum posts I read would have mentioned that somewhere, but what do you do? I'm probably going to see if I can just get Skyrim to run as is with a few workarounds, but if I really end up feeling like I need to use ENB it's good to have that bit of info.

The problem of BLACK textures are caused by the fault of the mipmaps inside the dds files of the textures. Have none relation to ENB or DLL's or Operating System. Sometimes the textures look good because the game autogenerate the mipmaps and some times that solve the problem temporally, but after playing a bit, or save load the game the problem appear again. Put a link to your body texture mod. Probably is bad made and you must change to a well know body mod like CBBE or Demonic or Leyenda.
