For better or worse, the future of adult gaming is basically Lover's Lab.  This is the only place anything really original or creative ever happens.

 

Japan hasn't done anything but rehash the same visual novel trope for the last ten years and they're all completely identical.  "Totally average school kid" bangs between three and seven vapid bimbos and they all turn into his sex slaves.  Repeat unto eternity.  Oh, and one is always average build for the new customers, one is always obviously underage despite what they claim on the product page for the all important pedo demographic, and one always has tits the size of Mount Rushmore for the MILF folks.  If there's more than three then it's Kid Sister Figure for the incest crowd, Tsundare bitch queen who turns into a total sub once her pants come off for the incel crowd, helium sucking airhead for whoever the fuck is into dipshit girls and then, finally if they make it up to seven, the quiet girl who is supposed to be a Japanese game dev's idea of what a goth chick is like (who will only prove to show that they've never actually met one).  Go on, try to find a VN game that doesn't fit that mold.

 

Patreon is just a place where people pay amature game devs to not work on games.  Why finish anything when you're raking in $5000 or more per month to pretend to be working on something?  I have more faith in Steam Early Access than anything on Patreon.  It's sad.

 

Steam opening the door to adult games has been nothing more than a repeat of everything else Steam has done for the last decade - a torrent of zero effort shovelware that isn't even worth the $0.99 most of it costs.  Just steal a dozen pics of any random Japanese hentai site, chop them up into an asset-flip Unity puzzle game template and ta-da, instant Steam porn game.

 

Nuntaku is just pay-to-win web browser trash.  'Nuff said.

 

Lover's Lab is the only place I've seen anything really amazing happen for adult games in the last several years.  Why?  Because the people here aren't in it for the money.  They're in it to make good games & mods.  They actually care about the quality of their work, which is more than 99% of the people releasing crap Steam, Patreon, Nuntaku or working out of some VN factory in Japan can say.  It is truly amazing how much difference that makes.

 

So keep it up!

With games like House Party, Amorous, Breeders of the Nephelym and Princess & Conquest on Steam right now, I'd say that the future of adult gaming is looking pretty bright right now, unexpectedly so.
