BigTBen Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 I'm playing Sims 4 on a laptop and I had a problem with my Sims having streaked hair during game play. It would not show up in CAS, only while playing. I searched and found that by going into options and disabling the laptop mode it would fix this problem. That worked. My question is there any harm or long term effects of playing without the laptop mode checked? Problems like overheating, lagging etc.
R-Lo Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 No problem I've found so far, my laptop is about 3 years old and been playing Sims for 2 years ? I think it's more for performance than anything else as a laptop won't always have a gaming spec
Guest Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 Usually not. If a laptop overheats usually it shuts down alone. Almost all laptops produced in the last 5 years have such feature. The option "laptop mode" of Sims, is used to reduce heavy graphic calls to the graphic card. Usually this because many laptops do not have a dedicated graphic card, so the DirectX (under Windows) have to emulate it in software. In case your laptop has a dedicated/discrete graphic chip (also a modest one) then there is no problem in disabling the laptop mode while playing.
BigTBen Posted September 20, 2018 Author Posted September 20, 2018 Thanks R-Lo and CPU for the replies. My laptop is about 9 years old and I had to make some changes in the options menu before. I had some tops that would either float in front of the sim or cause the top half of the sim disappear when I panned out. The fix was to change the sims detail to very high. I was worried about putting too much stress on the system. Thanks again.
Guest Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 What is the model of your laptop @behensks? Maybe I can give a look to it and give you more info.

I also found this myself when panning out etc, Although sim details setting will correct it, this may still be present with some custom content, whether improperly made or a very high poly count, It's mostly common with alpha hairstyles too when scrolling past walls and stairs etc

You do have a 7th gen i7 and a dedicated nVidia GPU. The GPU is quite old and made for laptops but should provide enough power to run Sims 4 on the laptop screen (that is a 1600X900 so less than a 1080 pixels screen.) I cannot find support for auto shutdown of the GT 230M but for sure the i7 supports it.
BigTBen Posted September 20, 2018 Author Posted September 20, 2018 Thanks CPU. I did install speedfan to monitor the temps. I'll minimize that game every 15 or 20 minutes to check the temps. Things were getting very warm when playing Sims 3. Not having as much of a problem with Sims 4. I don't remember what it was doing when playing Sims 2. It's been along time since I played it.

BigTBen Posted September 20, 2018 Author Posted September 20, 2018 It's been working fine with Sims 4 (Sims 3 is a different story. Like everyone else, it takes a week to load even with merge packages and it heats up faster.) My biggest concern with TS4 was with turning off the laptop setting and what affect it would have. From what I'm hearing, there shouldn't be any real problem. Thanks for all the help and advice.
Guest Posted September 20, 2018 Posted September 20, 2018 No, you will not. it is a safe spot for really old machines that may not work at all.
BigTBen Posted September 21, 2018 Author Posted September 21, 2018 Thanks again CPU for the help and advice. I think we can close this one out.
