So I installed Skyrim Special Edition recently played it a bit then went back to Oldrim and found that the keyboard doesn't work at all I can still use the mouse but the keyboard doesn't do anything I can't even type the player character's name after starting a new game or open the console, I tried uninstalling SSE that didn't work, I tried validating the game cache that didn't work, and I tried going into Oldrim's SkyrimPrefs.ini to change bKeyboardEnable to find that it is missing, I tried adding it back but that didn't do anything either please can somebody help?

Goto the SkyrimPrefs.ini for Skyrim SSE, (yes SSE), (i.e at C:\Users\USERNAME\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition)

and make sure that under [MAIN]

bGamepadEnable=0
bKeyboardEnable=1

I then make the file read only for good measure.

Then curse Bethesda to hell and back for being werido nutters.

Edit :-

This post (

) has a more concise steps. Only only did it once and missed the additional step in my statement.

Will that still work if I uninstalled and deleted the sse folder?

No idea. Sorry. Worth a try if the other thing is still there. (or maybe just delete or rename the other ini), (when I said the other ini I meant the SSE one not the Original Skyrim one. Assuming the settings folder is still there after you removed sse).

I did read Skyrim Keyboard.

But I did understand the topic wrong.

Can I ask you OP. when you did face this strange issue, did you try to turn off your PC and start it again?

The game it self should not have hijacked your keyboard.

it was right after I installed SSE that the problem started, but I fixed it now thanks to spoonsinger, I did try the method before only difference was that I uninstalled SSE did some more reading on the subject and tried some more options then changed the skyrimprefs.ini options for Oldrim but it didn't work, but then I fixed it by reinstalling SSE then changing both skyrimprefs.ini's like spoonsinger said and the problem is fixed now, because of that I do think SSE was the culprit, I'm no programmer or anything like that so I can't tell ya why it happened if I had to guess it might be because the two files have the same name and steam might be trying to use the SSE one over the Oldrim one, but again I'm just guessing
