Mod Organizer2 and LOOT problem :(

Hi all. in the past i always used Mod Organizer with Skyrim and executable like LOOT and Bodyslide etc.

Now i am trying to set up a well modded game with SkyrimSE. i have installed Mod Organizer 2 and began placing various sensible mods into the game. However i cant get LOOT to work at all. I have insatalled LOOT onto my PC and through the Mod organizer 2 menu, chosen the LOOT exe and its path. Normally this works just fine and LOOT detects the game and DLC's as well as any mods i installed.

But now as soon as i click LOOT via MO2 i keep getting error messages. :(

Well i have no idea why but Nexus sends my mods to this location ' Local Disc (C:) > Users > Sophie > AppData > Local > ModOrganizer > Shai ( my characters name) > Mods'

But my LOOT is in ' Local Disc (C:) > Program Files (x86) > LOOT'

And my game is installed in ' Local Disc ( C:) > Program Files ( x86) > Steam > SteamApps > Common > Skyrim Special Edition'.

Now i know everyone will be like ' Oh dont put your game in the program Files ( x86)!' but i dont have another drive / SSD to put my game/s into. Steam seemed to automatically install onto that location when i first installed Steam long ago and i cant seem to get my games to install in any other place because Steam for some reason wont let me. I have tried in Settings on Steam but it just tells me each time that my games will go on the above destination.

And i have no idea why when i install games via Nexus that they get sent to a Users Directory :(

On Oldrim and the older MO they always got put in same location as my game as did LOOT and therefore everything seemed to read each other. Now everything is in a different place.

Any help or advice to help me get my game and MO2 and LOOT too all cooperate with my mods would be really helpful please.

Modern mod management tools use a virtual file system that makes the mods available at runtime rather than dumping everything into the game folder. This keeps the game itself clean and provides much more control and reversibility for overwriting. It also allows for multiple profiles using different mods without having to clear stuff out every time you switch. When you install a mod the files are copied to another location and are added to the VFS at runtime. Every application that needs to access the mods as though they are in the game folder must be run through the mod manager in order to see them.

Running LOOT outside of the manager should show only the base game and DLC ESMs but it will prove that LOOT itself is working.

With regards to having a second Steam game installation folder there is a trick to get another folder on the same volume:

  • First exit Steam completely from the Steam client menu.
  • Create your new installation folder which must contain another folder called "steamapps". For instance "C:\Games\steamapps".
  • Find the file "C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\libraryfolders.vdf" and make a backup.
  • Now edit the original libraryfolders.vdf and add a line that points to your new folder:
"LibraryFolders"
{
    "TimeNextStatsReport"        "12345678"
    "ContentStatsID"        "121110987654321"
    "1"        "C:\\Games"
}

The number "1" is the index of the location so more can be added sequentially if required though this should only do done manually if Steam is preventing it otherwise.

  • Now restart Steam and check that the new installation path is available by going through the installation dialogue for something.
  • You can move the existing Skyrim folder to the new location and it should be detected as normal by Steam but you will need restart Steam and update the MO2 settings.

Hope that helps.
