Summer City Stereo

For X-Change Life 0.25.9

Summer City already had musicians, radio stations, club performances, and a surprising amount of music hidden throughout X-Change Life.

Summer City Stereo turns that material into something the player can actually engage with.

Buy music at Camelot Music, pick up a Realistic SC-30 Personal Stereo from Radio Shack, listen to Summer City's radio stations, build a personal music collection, favorite the releases you like, and keep the music playing while you're at home.

The mod also provides an expandable music system that other mods and artists can add to without replacing the core.

What It Adds

Camelot Music

Camelot Music is a new store in Paradise Mall dedicated to music.

Browse the available catalog by release or genre, inspect albums and singles, listen to track previews, and purchase releases to add them to your personal collection.

Available releases can include:

albums
EPs
singles
live recordings
DJ compilations

Prices scale with the size of the release rather than every album costing the same amount.

Once purchased, a release becomes available through your personal stereo at home. (Listen to music while doing chores!)

An Actual Summer City Music Catalog

Summer City Stereo combines existing XCL music with original releases created for the expanded setting.

The catalog includes material associated with characters and locations already found in the game, alongside new Summer City artists.

The official Media Pack can continue expanding independently of the main mod, so new music does not require rebuilding the entire playback system.

Track Previews

You don't have to buy something completely blind.

Camelot allows you to preview supported tracks before purchasing a release.

Starting another preview replaces the current one, and leaving the music-browsing screen stops the preview.

If your SC-30 was already playing music, Camelot temporarily gets control of the audio and your personal listening can resume afterward.

Store previews do not count as normal listening activity.

Music While You Shop

Camelot itself now has music.

Rather than playing one fixed loop every time you enter, the store can draw from the available catalog and keep a randomized in-store rotation running while you browse.

Tracks begin at safe randomized points rather than constantly restarting from the beginning.

Previewing a song temporarily takes over the audio without losing the shop's current background track.

This ambient store music is presentation only—it does not count as the PC deliberately sitting down to listen to music.

The Realistic SC-30 Personal Stereo

Radio Shack sells the Realistic SC-30 Personal Stereo for $75.

It combines Summer City's retro aesthetic with modern playback underneath: chunky controls, headphones, radio tuning, and cassette-style music releases without forcing the player to deal with actual tape degradation or rewinding.

Once you own one, you can use it from home to listen to:

Summer City radio
purchased Camelot releases
your favorite music rotation

You do not need to purchase any albums before using it—the radio tuner works immediately.

Your Music Library

Anything you purchase from Camelot is added to My Music.

Your library keeps track of owned releases and lets you choose what you actually want to hear.

You can also mark releases as Favorites.

Favorites can be used as a more focused listening rotation when you don't want the SC-30 choosing from everything you own.

Your ownership and favorites are saved normally with the game.

Now Playing

When the SC-30 is active at home, Summer City Stereo can display a compact Now Playing panel in the normal sidebar.

From there you can quickly:

pause or resume
skip to the next track or program
switch the stereo off

You don't have to return to the bedroom every time you want to stop or skip a song.

The panel only appears while the stereo is genuinely active.

Summer City Radio

The SC-30 also functions as a radio tuner.

Summer City Stereo brings together the radio material already scattered through XCL and presents it as actual stations.

Current stations include:

KHOT 105.3 — The Heat

Top 40, dance, and Summer City pop.

KLIV 91.7 — Live Wire

Live performances, events, and broadcast coverage.

WDOV 107.1 — The Dove

Gospel, sacred music, and theological programming.

WCRK 94.7 — The Crank

Hip-hop, bass, and Summer City street culture.

WTLK 1010 AM — Talk 1010

Talk radio, civic debate, call-ins, and political discussion.

WRTS 88.1 — Roots Radio

Caribbean, Latin, Miami, and roots-oriented music.

Stations can contain music, live performances, talk programming, archive material, and other broadcasts.

The system is expandable, so additional mods can add stations or programming later.

Radio Isn't Just a Playlist

Summer City Stereo distinguishes between different kinds of radio content.

A music broadcast can be recognized as music.

A talk show is still a talk show.

A debate does not magically become Music practice just because it came through headphones.

That distinction matters for optional Interests & Hobbies integration and also gives future radio expansions considerably more room than a simple shuffled MP3 folder.

Interests & Hobbies Support

Summer City Stereo can integrate with the U666 Interests & Hobbies system. (To be released at a later date)

When that integration is present, the game can distinguish between merely owning music and actually spending time listening to it.

Deliberate listening can gradually contribute to Music Familiarity.

The integration is deliberately conservative:

buying music does not grant Music Familiarity;
selecting an album does not grant Music Familiarity;
Camelot previews do not count as normal listening;
background store music does not count;
talk radio does not count as Music practice;
repeatedly looping short tracks does not become an easy Familiarity exploit.

Summer City Stereo records what was actually heard.

Interests & Hobbies remains responsible for deciding what that listening is worth.

Paradise Mall Expanded Compatibility

Summer City Stereo includes optional support for Paradise Mall Expanded.

When a supported version is installed, Camelot can appear in the expanded mall layout in an appropriate location.

Without it, Camelot uses its normal vanilla-mall placement.

The compatibility logic is designed to avoid creating two Camelot stores simply because the expansion is installed.

Paradise Mall Expanded is not required.

Media Pack

Summer City Stereo is split between the gameplay/runtime mod and an official Media Pack.

The Media Pack contains the heavier material such as:

original music;
release cover art;
Camelot artwork;
SC-30 presentation media.

Separating the packages means ordinary code updates do not require players to re-download all of the music again.

For the normal public installation, install both the current:

through Mod Loader.

Do not unpack the Mod Loader packages.

For Modders and Music Creators

Summer City Stereo is designed to be expandable.

Other mods can add their own:

A normal music pack should only need to register its own content.

It should not need to replace Camelot, modify the SC-30, or build another playback system.

Templates and a modder's guide are available for creators who want to add music to Summer City.

Installation

Install the current Summer City Stereo and Summer City Stereo Media Pack through Mod Loader.

Then, in game:

Visit Radio Shack if you want to buy the SC-30.
Visit Camelot Music to browse and purchase releases.
Use the SC-30 at home to choose between radio and owned music.
Favorite releases if you want a more focused personal rotation.

Current Development

Summer City Stereo is actively expanding.

The current line includes the Camelot music store, genre browsing, music previews, in-store playback, owned music, Favorites, the SC-30 personal stereo, Summer City radio, home Now Playing controls, and optional Interests & Hobbies and Paradise Mall Expanded integration.

Additional artists, releases, and radio content can be added without redesigning the core system.
