A familiar face and more

Buckle in this is going to be a big one; got a screenshot of a familiar character, a rant about resetera, my "review" of the Ashen Wolves DLC for Fire Emblem Three Houses and something I've never attempted to do before. It'll all be spoilered for convenience, although you're all probably just here for the image.

First off resetera:

Spoiler

I'll begin this by prefacing this with saying that this is the closest I will get to anything political.

I'd also like you all to keep these two points in mind while reading this rant:

  1. I view politics the same way I view religion; I don't care as long as you're not harming or otherwise inconveniencing me or anyone else because of it.
  2. I view video games as art, and I don't like seeing art censored.

So Resetera, it's a forum I assume some of you have heard of right? Well we usually hear about it whenever something bad comes from them be it weird fetishes (I don't kinkshame but some of that shit is something only someone who needs some serious mental help would find sexually appealing) or the child porn or the fact that they seem to use the insane amount of power they've somehow managed to come to wield to get game devs to censor their games jsut to appeal to a few psychopaths who probably wouldn't even buy the game to begin with. Actually it's that last part that has caused me to do this rant since they managed to get the localisation team for Persona 5 Royale (a game/DLC that I've been looking forward to) to censor parts of the game, the thing is the parts getting censored are jokes that were in the BASE GAME that was released a little over 3 years ago and honestly I don't get what the problem is about a FUCKING JOKE. The internet is an amazing thing but it's giving psychopaths a way to influence things they have no right to influence, hell these so called progressives can be just as bad as the biggest religious puritan with their views.

Ashen Wolves "review"

Spoiler

So the DLC dropped a week or so ago and it's not bad, gives you some more backstory about Jeralt and Byleth's mother as well. It's a fairly short DLC (only 7 chapters or so) and you have a fixed roster of characters to choose from those being Byleth, the three house lords, the Ashen Wolves and a character from each house, the reduced roster actually makes the DLC a lot harder as you have less tactical flexibility (each character that isn't Byleth or the Ashen Wolves has access to two advanced classes) although the 4th chapter's mission is needlessly difficult due to bad objectives (you had 20 turns to get from point A to point B, couldn't lose any units and the shortest route involved sending some units out of the way to unlock some gates) all in all the DLC is pretty short, has a fairly standard storyline and the additional classes are underwhelming as fuck being just the same as the advanced classes (which is annoying because Dark Flier has been OP as fuck in the last 3 FE games) and overall in the base game you use them until you can get to the amster classes, hell the only reason to play the DLC is for some extra backstory, the access to Abyss and the Ashen Wolves in the main game and a quite frankly overpowered item for completing it. It's a one and done sort of deal and hopefully any future DLC is a bit better than the first attempt.

The thing I've never done before:

Spoiler

So the thing I've never done before, it's basically an analysis on what I think makes a good character (and isn't just an excuse for me to rag on a book called the Empire of Silence, nope not at all) and honestly it's making them actually interesting and not just some whiney spoiled rich kid, which is where Empire of Silence gets it wrong, especially as it's written from a first person perspective and I really do not want to read about some whiney dickhead's issues especially as the book never really gets going (it looks to setup this grand space opera but just falls flat) so what makes a good character then? Well I should alter that and ask what makes a compelling character, everyone has their preferences but a character that FEELS like an actual human being (yes I'm saying Hadrian from Empire of Silence doesn't feel like a person) with both the good and the bad aspects of their personality. Hadrian feels like he has nothing but flaws. So what do I think makes a character compelling? It's a character who has a good balance of both positive and negative personality traits, it doesn't matter whether they're young or old, human or post-human killing machine as long as they don't feel like they're either too perfect or too imperfect (although persoanlly, I really like characters who have a bit of humour around them) the former makes the character a bit of a mary sue whereas the latter makes it hard to want them to win or accomplish their goals. As an example of who I think is a good character (since I name dropped the main character of Empire of Silence as what I think a bad character looks like) also from a book I can look no further than Uriel Ventris from Graham McNeill's, yes I know he's a post-human killing machine and 40k lore pretty much states that Adeptus Astartes don't have much in the way of personality but Uriel manages to feel like a proper person filled with doubts and hopes, he goes through a proper arc over the course of his first book (which has a far lower word count than Empire of Silence) he starts out feeling unworthy of succeeding his predecessor (and good friend) as captain of the 4th company of Ultramarines to becoming its captain in truth, he goes through trials and tribulations and overcomes them despite being a Space Marine in fact it didn't feel like I was reading a novel about Space Marines.

Sorry if the above felt a bit rambly and an excuse to rag on a book I didn't like all that much, but despite the fact I'm not a very good writer (I get crippling writer's block whenever I try and I don't like using 1000 words to describe something where 10 would suffice) I still feel like I've consumed enough media (movies, books, tv shows and video games) to have at least a passable knowledge on this sort of thing. Feel free to call me a fucking moron though and tell me why you disagree or think I'm wrong.
