FullMetal Alchemist Question

So I finished watching the 2003 FullMetal Alchemist series on Netflix last week, and I was somewhat....surprised is I guess the right word by the way the series ended.  (Please don't spoil it for people who haven't seen it yet.....even if it is 15 years old.)  So I did a little looking and found the movie FMA: Concqueror of Shamballa, which seems to wrap of the series.  The catch is that the movie isn't on netflix or hulu or, as far as I can tell, any other streaming service.  I did find it for sale on Amazon and Barns & Noble, but $45 U.S. for the DVD and close to $70 for the BluRay seems kinda steep for a single movie.

 

My question is this: Is it worth the price? 

I could easily read the plot/spoilers on the wiki, but I'm not sure that I want to (and please don't spoil it for me!).  I'd rather not torrent/pirate the thing, but I do want to see it. The main thing here is that the cost is kind of putting me off, so I wanted some other opinions.

I haven't seen the movie in question, but I wouldn't pay $45 myself.  It'd have to be so perfect it brings me to tears just seeing it for that price.  I say try to find a preowned copy somewhere, maybe one of those second hand trading pages on facebook or something, there's got to be somewhere you can find people who might realistically have that movie and be willing to part with it.  But yeah I can't say any movie is worth that price, and if all that other stuff is too much work then looking online might be best.  Might be able to find a detailed plot synopsis somewhere so you're not just reading a wiki summary.

I'm not really familiar with Crunchyroll.......(Googles it again)......oh they do have the full movie to stream.  I thought those were just trailers. Thanks!

 

 

.................................................. Yeah that really isn't worth $20 let alone $45+.  Thanks for the tip abut Crunchyroll, glad that I didn't buy that.

If the ending had been better and I really wanted to have the entire 2003 series complete, then I'd do it.  The ending was not great and I don't really care that much about having the series and that's what was putting me off in the first place, but I really wanted to know how they were going to end things.

I personally liked the 2003 series better than Brotherhood. I felt that there was a sacrifice of much moral dilemma in Brotherhood for more quality action scenes (it's not a bad thing, best scene was when Furor Bradley fights Greed). To me, the 2003 dilemmas felt like they carried much more weight on characters as opposed to Brotherhood. I liked the original design of Scar and Rose in the 2003 series. Some characters are different (Sloth and Wrath) from both series.  I look at them both as separate series one that followed the manga, and one that used what it had to make a story because the manga wasn't finished yet.

You can say that the 2003 FMA (Director: Seiji Mizushima) was a stepping stone that allowed the author of the book to say "OK, the series wasn't bad, but maybe I could change this and that?" for the Brotherhood series (Director: Yasuhiro Irie). Both series ultimately have aspects that I enjoyed. FMA 2003 however, will always be my first and favorite because it and FLCL came on Toonami when I was younger.

 

Don't forget to check out The Sacred Star Of Milos. That had a pretty satisfying ending. It's also cheap on for blu-ray on Amazon.

I'm still working my way through Brotherhood, I like some of the changes (Barry the Chopper is a more fun in Brotherhood) but others (Lust) I'm not as taken with. I guess that's equivalent exchange at work though.

 

Thanks for the tip on TSSoM, I'll search for that after I finish season 2 of Brotherhood.  I don't think I'm going to buy any of the anime, I'm not (currently) working this summer so I'm job hunting and short on cash.  I might get the comic, if I can, as I saw they've started re-releasing it and I do kinda want to compare both series to the source material.

It is worth watching, but don't go in with high expectations.
