Skyrim's renderer fails at start-up

As the title says, my issue with Skyrim at the moment is that the game opens the window and almost immediately afterwards, the game's render-er fails with an unknown error. This issue started after I did a Windows 10 update. I use Mod Organizer to mod Skyrim and I have tried to start the game from the launcher as well as from Steam itself and from within Mod Organizer with no luck. I know for certain that this is not an issue with my load order or the mods themselves, because of the setup working prior to the update.

Here are my system spec's if necessary :

    - Windows 10 64-bit operating system (version 1803)

    - Intel Core i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00 GHz

    - 16 GB of RAM

    - OS Build 17134.48

Is there any other information that you guys need? In case you guys haven't already guessed, I need to know whats causing this, and how to fix it. If there is anything else, just let me know.

Could be worth posting what kind of gpu you have, and driver version for it.

whats an unkown error?

maybe resolution is wrong for skyrimprefs.ini , its only one problem which comes to my head now with render-er fails...

@LazyBoot

Yeah, sorry about that. I'm a tad muddled at the moment.

My GPU (if you meant my graphics card) is an AMD Radeon R7 450 version 17.7

@skyrimowy

I'd already checked that. Everything was what it should have been. My setup had worked fine prior to the Windows 10 update on the 13th, though. So it couldn't have been that anyway.

maybe you need uninstall this windows update from 13th and update again? windows 10 is specifically system, when all work correctly they give us an update and for some people, "crash" their systems, games, programs, etc. xD

six months ago I got a problem with hibernation mode in my laptop [when start from hibernation i can see only gray pixels and nothing more] ...re-update helps

I honestly was thinking about reverting to before the update, but it was saying it could cause me to have to reinstall some programs. That might mean MO and that worries me. 151 GB worth of mods is no small amount to reinstall.

do "system restore point" and then you can try reinstall update windows 10

if something went wrong, just revert this system restore point which you did

anyway you can backup your mods on the extrenal disk or something... or looking for different solutions

honestly I have no idea, if re install windows 10 update doesnt work, then I dont know

because you problems starts by windows update...yeah?

Yeah, for the most part it's because of the Windows 10 update. I have an external disk drive, but it's inaccessible. Or I would have done it already. Forgot the damn password.

I did not have Win 10 installed on my PC, but see if these tips can solve your problem. Check the first case then the second and the last, so we start on the principle of elimination to try to solve your problem:

1. Sometimes, during a system update the tools and options are returned to their default settings. Make sure the write and read Admin accesses are validated so that all the tools, executables and files used to launch your modded game could run properly.

2. If you still have problems to start the game, try to do it the opposite way! It may seem silly to you, but you know, logic in computer system is what it is ... and it all depends on the elements that your update has changed concerning the OS game management. In this case disabling compatibility mode on both SKSE and TESV.exe could do the trick.

3. If the problems still persist, return the executables to admin mode, while leaving the compatibility mode disabled for the previously mentioned files.

Hope this helps.

How do I get to these specific settings? Are they in Control Panel?

It is better to leave the UAC at its protection level enabled because it is a secure mode for your applications and system files. Deactivating the UAC is a HUGE security risk on your part, always running stuff as an Administrator, is how the randsomware malware encrypts your files (the process requires Administrator permissions).

You only need to change these settings for the executables related to your game: open your File Explorer and navigate to your game directory.

Locate skse_loader.exe and TESV.exe. Hover over with your mouse on each one (one at a time) and do a right-click, by doing this a window will pop-up. Go to the "Property" field and click on it, a new window will open. Go to the "Compatibility" tab and change the settings here by checking/unchecking "Run this program in compatibility mode for" and "Run this program as administrator" as explained in my previous post.

UAC has been disabled for quite some time, but I tried what you suggested and no luck. I double checked the launcher to make sure the resolution and aspect ratio is what it should be and it is.

I assume that me using Mod Organizer isn't a problem? Could that be why your suggestion didn't work?

You have an error message that only appears when you try to start the game, if I understand your initial post.

Can you do the necessary to send it in a post, please? If there is no mention of Mod Organizer in it, the problem could come from elsewhere, but ...

Which version of MO have you installed? Sometimes version 2 gives some problems after a certain time of use.

Before considering switching to a different version if this is the case, we will try something else first: it is possible that Windows updated or modified some DirectX components and what else:

1. Download and install this specific version for Win 10 coming from the Official Microsoft Download Center, set all on this page to "temporary trusted" if you have a scripts blocker addon:

DirectX End-User Runtime Web Installer

2. If this doesn't work, check your AMD GC Control Panel setup preferences:

How To Create Game Profiles Using AMD Radeon™ Software

3. Try to reinstall your Graphics Card drivers and redo the 2nd point above.

I have version 1.3.11 for Skyrim, but other versions for different games. So I can say with absolute certainty that it isn't MO causing these issues. And if it is, it's another instance of MO (perhaps my Fallout 4 instance, for example). And yes, I get an error on startup. "Failed to initialize renderer. Unknown error." or something like that.

Here is a direct copy and paste of my original post :

Did that answer any lingering questions?

i tell you what you should to do, some people on this forum have similar problems and reinstall newest update of windows 10 helps

just do "system restore point" before you start reinstalling an update

I have no intention of re-installing the update. If I have to revert to a previous version of windows, then that is the version I will continue to use. No matter what.

But if I can fix this problem without doing that, then I'll do my best.

for 95% you cant fix this problem in another way

reinstall update take max 3-4hours, looking for alternative which propably never work may take few days and a lot of nerves

eventually wait for new update from windows...but can't guarantee if works

Your choice

I don't have Windows 10, but when I do have this issue changing the graphics driver to a known working one almost always fixes it. YMMV of course.

Thank you, but only half. This eliminates a possible problem with MO 2 as you use MO 1.3.11 for Skyrim. But I would have liked to have a screen shot when your message appears, in order to be able to read exactly its content.

An exception code must be logically displayed in this one, and will give us a track to possibly interpret.

exactly, you dont have windows 10...xD Windows 10 sometimes in itself is a problem.

I would like to have windows 7 on my laptop but it's not possible with my CPU. Comparison windows 7 and 10 it is pointless now  In windows 10 when update - something can go wrong and you dont know it, until you do not use it . In windows 7 you can block updates and have everything in the ass xD. Ehh W7 was much simplier :frown:

6 months ago i have problems with broken hibernation mode, skyrim not read ENB and witcher 3 crash to desktop in many situations, when i reinstall update...everything returned to normal
