Stable game suddenly borked after FNIS crash, need some ideas

I've been playing with mostly the same mods for awhile and my game has been stable. Then the other day I ctd'd while playing around with fnis pcea2 animations and my game hasn't been right since. At first I couldn't start the game at all, not vanilla, not with skse. I tried deactivating the last 10 mods installed, nada. Cleaned my saves. I verified the game files through Steam and that allowed me to start a vanilla game, make a new save then start with skse64 but it would ctd everytime I tried save. I reinstalled skse64, fnis, and all it's sub mods; reran fnis/loot, no errors, still couldn't start the game with skse. Clean my saves again. So I started a vanilla game, made a new save, quit to desktop, and  can start and save the game with skse64 but I still can't start the game with skse without using a vanilla save. I'd be happy to post a load order but I don't believe it has anything to do with my problem. I think either the fnis crash borked something, or a Steam or Windows update borked something (both happened about the same time).

If it was triggered by an animation mod my guess would be that you either have some stray files that didn't get removed when you reinstalled or maybe you have some sort of skeleton conflict.  I seem to remember having some crashes when I installed pretty combat animations wrong.  Also if you're using the latest XPMSE, I've heard there are issues with it.  I rolled back to the previous version after trying it.

Aha, I bet it is xpmsse. So I had made a mistake installing skee the first time and then fixed the mistake right before this happened. I rolled back xpmsse but still can't load a save without making a vanilla save first. I'll keep messing with it. Is there anything extra I need to do after rolling back xpmsse that I might be forgetting?

Only thing I can think of is to make sure XPMSSE overwrites any skeleton changes made by any other mod and rerun FNIS.  I'm not using Racemenu at the moment but I tried it and it seemed to work ok for me.  Some of the sliders don't work if I'm not mistaken until he finishes the SKSE plugins.  I'm horrible at doing anything with the sliders though so I'd be reliant on finding presets made by someone else that look good.  I can pick hair/facepaint/etc but all of the morph sliders are offlimits unless I want someone that looks like a mutant with leprosy.
