The 'Porting Mods to Skyrim Special Edition' Question

I didn't really think about this too much before. I always had a nagging feeling but could never figure out what it was, but then it just hit me like a bomb today, and so I felt like sharing my opinion on it:

Is anyone else besides me sick of seeing all of these posts on mod pages, brazenly asking the mod author questions such as, 'Can you port this mod to Skyrim Special Edition?' or 'When will this be on SSE?' 'Can we get a Special Edition version, please?' and so on...

I swear there's a million of these posts on every popular mod page out there, and it's more than likely to have already been asked and answered on all of them by now, yet the questions continue getting asked anyway!  It really pisses me the fuck off...

I myself personally have never asked one of these questions, probably because I haven't made the jump to SSE yet. But whenever I decide to, I'd like to think I would never ask this question. Ever. Because if I wanted to get a mod for SSE, then I wouldn't be looking at mods on the Oldrim Nexus/LoversLab in the first place!

I just made this topic in case there was anybody else out there who wanted to voice their opinion on this matter, rant about it this dumb question, or just vent about anything at all in general. The possibilities can be endless!

While it's often a dumb question, I don't agree with the implication that it's always a dumb question.

When you start playing and realize that you really miss mod (a) and ask if the author is planning on converting it... that's a compliment and should be treated as such.

The real problem are the people that ask when thirty seconds of searching would have told them the answer. Like you said, many/most of the authors have already answered the question. Take the time to check first... then asking is fine.

Oh, and make sure you are asking... not demanding...

I've been switched to SE for a while but when ever I've looked at a mod from oldrim that I want in SE I generally look to if it's already been done by someone else and if not I just do it myself. Some times it works some times it doesn't, I've seen a few that just won't convert with the simple tools and need a lot more effort - for instance some of the armour and clothing mods just won't convert, either causing a ctd or they're positions are completely off.

Of mods that I've converted over, sometimes the original author will do it later and I switch to that. 'Arissa' is one I switched a long time ago, even before the SKSE64 was available because I couldn't imagine a Skyrim without her but I doubt we'll see an official conversion.

I kind of agree, kind of not. There have been plenty of times where I will see someone make the request and it's clear they never bothered to read anything on the main page or stickied posts on Nexus. If they had, they would have seen the mod author already said something about it. However, sometimes mod authors don't make it clear that they are or aren't porting even if they have answered the question already. Responding to a comment with the answer to that question only for it to get buried in a flood of other comments is a sure fire way to get that question repeatedly asked.

Other times, mod authors are waiting themselves for other mods (or equivalents) to get ported over. I've come across several that were waiting for mods to be ported that had, in fact, already been ported over and they had no idea. Shortly after being informed, those mod authors ported their mods over or put plans in place to start porting. Some mod authors refuse to port because of some perceived problem with SSE that no longer exists do to an update, patch, or mod, but they don't know about it because they don't follow the SSE mod community. Some mod authors simply think there is no demand for their mod on SSE, in which case, shouldn't people request a port to show that there is demand? Some instances I can understand where authors have announced plans to port, but have gone a year or more without a word about it despite the oldrim counterpart still getting updates. That can lead to frustration and the reiteration of that same old will-you-port question.

There is already a thread at Bethesda.net, so check that thread just to avoid posting your request about a mod that has already being ported.

Although, it would be a good idea to have a "Port a mod to SSE" thread here.

Well that thread will really help and yes asking same question again and again also pisses me off.
