Shinryuu Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Some of the Mediafire links for Sexout and Lovers with PK have tried to give me viruses. Usually its one of those "Viruses have been found on your computer! Download This!". The virus I usually get is a Google Redirect kind of virus, and Avast always misses it. Hongfire and the New Vegas wiki have also given me viruses, which is a shame because those are good sites as well. Anyone else catch anything down;ooading from here?
Ark of Truth Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 MediaFire is 100% safe. You have most likely gone somewhere else and got the virus. I have used the Sexout links completely fine without any issues. Try using a different anti-virus. If that fails its formatting your computer.
Kamen Rider Kuuga Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 LL has to be one of the safest places on the whole of the Internet when it comes to virus attacks/infections. It seems that the only time this ever comes up is when people get something from somewhere else, bad timing pops up and they instantly place the blame on this site.
lemonbalm Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 Eh, formatting is my idea of a last resort. Try downloading and running Malwarebytes and Spybot first after a thorough scan with your antivirus (I recommend AVG). It also helps to install an adblocker.
Mashi Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 That's malware masquerading an antivirus program. You should be using an adblocker, or hosts file with a block list.
thesapien Posted September 7, 2012 Posted September 7, 2012 If and when, always report it to the site admin where you found the link. Try to take as many screen shots along the way as you can, remember or record all the steps of exactly what happened and give as much detail as possible. If you think it happened starting from a link here, always report it to Ashal. You sound unsure and vague, and starting a thread like this can cause undue scare. It's okay if you're asking for help though. Are you asking for help on this? It's also okay if you're quite certain it's a common problem here and want to warn everyone. Are you certain and warning us? If so, you should still provide more detail and report it too Ashal right away.
Shinryuu Posted September 7, 2012 Author Posted September 7, 2012 I don't mean to scare anyone, and it is entirely possible that it had originated elsewhere, but the screen specifically came up in Mediafire links from this site multiple times (at least 3). I wonder if the virus was dormant and something in Mediafire might have triggered it somehow. I wanted to see if anyone else had the same issue, but it seems it was just me.
Ark of Truth Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 Well you got it from somewhere else and not from MediaFire or here.
thesapien Posted September 8, 2012 Posted September 8, 2012 So have you been running scans to see if your system is clean? Is it while you're at Mediafire a window pops ups? Wouldn't that be a problem with Mediafire and not LL? Before or after downloading the file? I'm asking because the problem, let's call it a "virus", could be from several places. One, it could be on your system. Two, it could be in the downloaded file (and now maybe on your system too). Three, it could be on a webpage either on Mediafire's server or LL's server (and not on your system nor in the downloaded file). So finding out exactly when the problem shows itself can help determine who has it. LL did once have some malicious code imbedded in an iframe on the site here that did cause some people's connection to redirect to another site, showing what you're describing maybe. So if you're thinking it may still be LL, do message Ashal here and he'll probably know right away how to find it and get rid of it or at least quickly check his end again. Oh, also, LL is using CloudFlare again. So if CloudFlare thinks you're infected, it will redirect you, as well. Sometimes a redirect can be legit. But if your own system is coming up clean after running scans, then, yeah, it's someone else's problem. On the plus side, if you just ignore the window and don't download anything from the redirected sites, you should come away unharmed. Using NoScript with Firefox can help protect you too so that your browser won't run any scripts from those redirected sites, though if your trusted website is infected you may still be running those scripts, so there's really no full proof methods, just surf smart and be aware. Also, I get false positives sometimes from antivirus software when downloading questionable stuff that someone probably just doesn't want me downloading. Of course, there are always "dark" viruses and such, the stuff not yet listed or more advanced and winning the security wars and often probably actually created by high tech teams working for governments, corporations, etc. So maybe someone is just fucking with you. Yeah, I added that just for fun.
