I've seen some weapons, specifically bullpup ones, use their own unique reloading animation, and some weapons with vertical grips use the correct animation where the character holds the vertigrip, yet these animations don't overwrite the vanilla ones. How is this done?

Well, the good mod makers, simply make the animation* and then give it a new name (so as not to overwrite existing ones) and then using the GECK they set up the weapon to use those new animations. The mod makers who do this are to be applauded, as it makes using that gun (or pack) compatible with others. :D

 

 

*Edit: I do NOT mean to imply that making animations is simple or easy!!

Yeah, I'm checking snimation tutorials so I can make a few weapon idle animations of my own. Is it a script on the weapon that does it? I might be wrong, but the GECK only allows you to pick from a limited selection of animations to choose from, right?

The Geck will allow you to pick from any animations that you load into it. I suggest looking through an esp that a mod author that did something similar to what you are wanting to do and reverse engineer it from there.
