OBLIVION - Enemies lag my game

My computer is beast enough to handle 50+ mods, Qarl's texture pack, the highest quality but whenever there are 3 rats next to me, my game's done for.

This lag happens only when there are 3+ enemies next to me (any type of enemy not only rats). The lag occurs even if I don't use mods. When I'm in the Market District and there are 7 people in my face, the game's fine.

What causes this? Is there a solution?

Oblivion is a CPU bottlenecked game which only will use 1 core. This can really bog down even a vanilla game if you push your settings too high with a weak CPU. Course a weak CPU and an onboard video card or an old one will make it even worse.

If OSR doesn't do the trick then back your settings down a notch to see if you can get game play going a bit better.

Right. I forgot to mention that even on the lowest quality I get lag when there are 3+ enemies. My CPU is definitely not weak. Oblivion takes less than 50% of CPU (in task manager .. hope I'm still talking about the same thing here).

Anywayz, OSR seems to work..

Remember if you are using a 32 bit system your memory is also capped at 2GB. So hi rez body textures and hi rez game textures (like Qarl's) can contribute to bringing your frame rate to a slide show. If you have a 64 bit system you can apply the 4GB patch to the oblivion.exe to help (make a backup of it somewhere 1st): http://www.ntcore.com/4gb_patch.php

Cheers,

Greg
