LFkwerot Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 Posting this as more of a general advice from someone who recently decided to clean up my install and my mods. Let me start by saying that i started using mods using nexus mod manager and after afew months realised why people switched to Mod Organizer. or how i keep installing and unninstalling mid playthrough with no care in the world Now for my first attempt at using mod organizer i took advantage of its ability to import mods from nexus mod manager and left it at that continuing to pile the mods (installing and uninstalling different mods as and when i wanted to use them) on until afew weeks ago when upgrading a mod skyrim decided it had enough of it all and decided to start crashing every 5 minutes. After a quick google search it soon dawned on me that NMM sometimes leaves scripts behind and installing and uninstalling mods on one save file was bad so instead of trying to blame the mods i had installed i decided to start over from scratch and this is where i realized all the mistakes i had done prieviously (and still did with the fresh install) i decided to wipe skyrim off the pc (until i realised there were still bits left in %appdata% grrrrrr). I took to the step guide and started following it letter by letter (or so i thought) tes5edit deleting itm records yea done that before i know what im doing (not realising or being overconfident about undoing and disabling those records instead leaving them deleted, And leaving skyrim in the x64 folder) after this fresh install i got probably less than half the mods before constant crashing started to occur again HOW COULD THIS BE ITS A FRESH INSTALL FOLLOWING A GUIDE i blamed the mods again left it a day out of frustration and went back to the guide to see where i had gone wrong if i had gone wrong The mistakes i found reading back through the guide again were staggering but there infront of my face i moved skyrim out of the x64 folder i deleted then undeleted and disabled those itm records i created cleaned esm's of the dlc's and ordered them correctly installed skse from the zip file instead of through steam i felt happier i was going to get my game back to how the lovely people here have modded it too So i started the game up on normal mode first got to just outside the cave and created a save there to be used. Then my own idoicy hit me again to cut this long story short i had enabled everysingle mod all at once and was trying to start on that save file crash after crash error report after error report i was getting frustrated again (my error log was longer than war and peace and i could change what error was thrown out by changing any ini setting) left it afew hours to go do other stuff and it hit me I was asking skyrim to load 101 mods of scripts all at once so i disabled them all and started loading them 1 or 2 at a time running fnis and bodyslide where needed loading the game let the scripts finish until the mcm menu was there saved on a new save exited and repeat All this time i thought i was just running out of memory i sort of was but i was reading the information wrong trying to set and unset iheapallocate and enabling and disabling speehacks and unsafefices and changing reserved memory size i got fixated on this where all i need to do was just let the game load afew mods at a time instead of all at once So here i am with what seems to be a stable game at the moment 101 mods loaded only using enb boost and loadgame ctd fix i do have have crash fixes v12 beta in my modlist (installed that early on) but as of yet i dont have it enabled and so far my game is stable enough for me (2 hours not one crash) without crash fixes installed. And lastly some tips from my experiences so far. dont get too hung up on reading game error exception address logs like i did i got fixated thinking it was memory allocation when it was just about giving the game time to run those scripts yes some will take you to a fix but some of the errors i was getting google was no help (im looking at you exception address 0x765E1359!) Mod organizer can save your current plugin list and load order list use it then go into the mod organizer profile folder and make a backup copy of it somewhere just in case shove a backup of the save file that goes with that list with them then put them with my next tip Make a skyrim tools folder in mine i have fallrim tools bethini vramtest TESVESSE and the zip files for enbboost skse installer files for loot and MO and tes5edit incase i need to reinstall with no internet. from now on after i install a new mod i will backup and retire the old save file and move onto the next save file moving the oldone to the tools folder i made And lastly the next mod i install i fully expect to break skyrim now that i have posted this Thankyou for taking the time to read this if you did i hope some it gave you a slight chuckle as i assure you i was not laughing the past few days
Varithina Posted September 6, 2017 Posted September 6, 2017 I think we all have done this at some point. Do not forget of course that updating mods is not the only potential source of problems with game, windows itself updating, graphics drivers, sound drivers all of the can cause problems when updated as well. As for me the tools for the game sit inside the mod organizer main directory as seperate directories themselves.
