Bethesda REALLY knows how to break stuff....

Just posted this over on the Beth forums:

More Bethesda fail.....

and a real gamebreaker IMHO.....

if you haven't gone far into the main Dragonborn quest (the Alduin quest, at least up to or perhaps past the Elder Scroll bit with the crazy dude in the ice fields), the Dawnguard quest triggers the Elder Scroll step at the College of Winterhold. Indicating a CLEAR conflict between the two questlines.

On my current character, I'm only at the bit where Delphine wants me to infiltrate the Thalmor Embassy. But thanks to Dawnguard's conflicting questline (which requires finding TWO scrolls if you side with the Dawnguard), I now have the bit where I have to find the crazy dude, and the quest specifically states it's to locate the Elder Scroll that Paarthurnax needs. Which I'm obviously not supposed to even know about yet. Additionally, setting the Dawnguard Scroll quest active does not make any difference, and the next step of the quest is unobtainable.

Way to go Bethesda. Break the original main quest AND the Dawnguard DLC quest in one fell swoop! LOL

Wonderful.....

I didn't have that issue and I have only just left RiverWood :-/

On what part of the main Dragonborn questline?

You leave Riverwood multiple times during the main quest. Once to see Alduin in Kynesgrove. Again to infiltrate the Thalmor Embassy (which is where mine broke). Again to find Esbern. And yet again to go to Alduin's Wall.

Follow-up to my earlier post on the Beth forums:

Follow-up to my post above:

Reloaded a previous save, and everything is back as it should be. I have the map marker at the College of Winterhold for the Dawnguard quest as it should be. However, Faralda at the ramp is screwing everything up. You CANNOT advance the Dawnguard questline without breaking the main Dragonborn questline. Faralda has no option to let you pass through the gate to advance the Dawnguard scroll quest. Going through her test and entering the college breaks the Dawnguard scroll quest, and triggers the Paarthurnax scroll quest as stated above.

In other words, you MUST advance through the main dragonborn quest BEFORE you can do the Dawnguard quest.

This sucks. I don't WANT to advance the main quest yet.

And it only gets worse from there:

More follow-up:

I managed to get past the Faralda bit by going through her test. However, the orc librarian guy shows no option for the Dawnguard scroll quest stage. He triggers the "Discerning the Transmundane" stage of the main Dragonborn questline, which reveals the existence of Paarthurnax to the player, who otherwise wouldn't even know about him if they hadn't asked Arngier if those at High Hrothgar were the only 4 Greybeards.

I can only begin to imagine the damage this causes further into the main questline. I imagine the "Clear Skies" stage will be completely screwed, since retrieving the scroll would certainly advance you past the point where you learn the shout, as well as EVERYTHING before it. Such as the Embassy stage, the Esbern stage, Blades Sanctuary stage, etc...

Bethesda REALLY screwed the pooch by using the college bit in the Dawnguard questline.

I'm gonna separate out a copy of the save to see if it breaks what I think it will break by retrieving the scroll for the Dawnguard quest.

I can only assume, but I imagine doing the Dawnguard stuff would trigger the same thing it triggered in the main Dragonborn quest, whether you've started that questline or not.

This was pretty surprising to uncover, as Bethesda was the first to recommend NEVER using MQ npcs in mods, as it will very likely break them, or their related questlines.

The guy who made the Leveler's Tower mod used the DB questline's cook in his mod, and it broke the DB quest until he removed all the dialogue and quest references from his copied npc.

points others not to use while use them by themselves, quite "smart" if u ask me. i dont remember Oblivion having issues like this. are they working worser and worser?

if the dawngaurd dlc is messing around with your normal questline, just turn the esm off and finish main first then do dawngaurd afterwards

Just tested it, the Dawnguard and MQ lines overlap for one quest. But it doesn't matter which one you do first.

So they haven't really broken that, it's just a bit weird that you get the quest description for the MQ line during the Dawnguard line.

If you do MQ first then you essentially skip that part of of the Dawnguard line and vice versa. Tested it both ways, nothing broke.
