Wacky No Sound Bug

Sound has worked perfectly throughout 30 levels of raising my character. Then, suddenly, this strange thing starts happening.

 

I get no sound at all from NPCs, but only if I'm looking directly at them. NPCs to either side of or behind my character are heard exactly as normal.

 

The problem persists whether desktop speakers or headphones are used.

 

The problem persists if a save is loaded from before the problem started.

 

Player voice works perfectly fine.

 

Has anyone experienced this problem before? I feel like it has to be some kind of setting, since sound is still getting played under certain conditions.

No, I have never enabled subtitles. Windows volume is at global 68% before factoring in the dial that is actually on my external speaker.

Hey guys, I found out what the issue was. Posting the solution here in case anyone else ever has this problem.

 

Turns out I was wrong when I said that wearing headphones doesn't matter. My desktop speaker system is surround sound, and after doing a sound test in my speaker settings I found that the central speaker is not working. Which is why the directionality of the voice acting mattered; the central speaker plays things directly in front of the character. It works fine when audio output is redirected away from the central speaker.

 

That being said, I have no idea what is wrong with it. I haven't touched it since it worked and it appears to be completely undamaged. It's plugged in and showing up correctly in the audio settings.

 

EDIT: I tried a weird solution. My desktop speakers have 3 cords, yellow black and green. I noticed that in the audio settings the headphone jack was also green, and both were referred to as "speakers". So I tried unplugging the green cord from the green speaker jack and into the headphone jack. Now my speakers work perfectly again, meaning the issue is with my green desktop speaker jack. I still don't know what could have caused it to malfunction.
