dummies guide to modding existing npcs?

As the topic implies, total newbie when it comes to modding anything, I see alot of presets for specific NPCs on the nexus, some look incredible but then look like crap in my game, some look ok but I dislike a few things about them. So I figured best thing to do is do it myself and have them look exactly how I want. Question is... how?

 

I've google searched for awhile and I find guides mostly pertaining to creating brand new NPCs, tho I just want to tweak existing ones. Kinda hoping there is a easy way to make the NPC exactly how I like them in game using Racemenu, export them and somehow make the NPC look exactly like that (prefer this as I have a lot of neat body paint that I'd love to add to NPCs). I do have a mod that gives me presets for almost all the female NPCs in the game, so I'd love to just load up their preset and then customize them from there.

 

So the big question is, is the above possible, and is there an easy to use guide/program/etc that can help me?
