Why Is ENB Killing My Skyrim?

Recommended Posts

I've been without Modded Skyrim for a Couple of weeks now after its suddenly stopped working, (It would not launch the game)

After several Re-installs, Running though Mods, banging my head against wall and much use of those words my mother would wash my mouse out with soap for

I then started a mod by mod install, starting with ENB

I was a bit surprised when with nothing else installed (Other than SKSE) that I hit the problem first time

It doesn't seem to leave any crash logs I can find

PC Specs

Operating System - Windows 10 Home 64-bit
CPU  - AMD FX-8350
RAM  - 32.0GB Dual-Channel DDR3 @ 668MHz (11-11-11-28)
Graphics  - 4096MB ATI AMD Radeon R9 380 Series

Please help

The only advice i can give you, is to not install the ENB first.

Start to build a clean and stable Skyrim with mods you like.

Then, choose the ENB and all its requirements (lights, climates, etc....)

An ENB does not kill Skyrim. An ENB improves Skyrim.

If your game has problems, check your mods, esp, compatibilities, load order and .ini files.

ENB either saves or kills Skyrim based on how it is or isn't configured to use system memory.  In my own experience the overwhelming majority of CTD's with an ENB on stem from the stupid things like skse.ini being named skse.ini.txt by default after installation.  Check Skyrim/Data/SKSE to ensure that it is correctly named without the .txt at the end.  There's a crucial memory fix in that file and SKSE will ignore it if there's a .txt at the end.  Why it installed like this when I got the package right from SKSE's site is beyond me.

You also probably want to be launching SKSE in administrator mode.  I have no idea why this is, but I've heard it tossed around, and it's one of the things I did right before I stopped crashing.

Next you'll want to play around with enblocal.ini in the Skyrim directory.  Read this:  http://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:ENBlocal_INI/Memory

I was shocked to discover Realvision's wonderful installer set me up with a totally incorrect VideoMemorySizeMb value.  I stopped crashing when I chopped about 200 MB from that value so windows wouldn't shit itself during heavy load.  With all that RAM you'll never hit that limit, as all modern ENB setups I know of use system memory in tandem with video memory for graphics.

You might want to try setting EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks to true.  You probably have enough total memory on your system for your ENB to ignore its usual dynamic allocation feature and just hog everything.

Play with the settings on that list until Skyrim starts working.  9 out of 10 chance your problem is in one or both of these two .ini files.

Thanks for the advise unfortunately still not working (BTW using ENB for its memory Management Functionality until I I can get a more or less stable Build)

Where I am at so far

Multiple Re-installs of Skyrim ENB and SKSE

And due to clicking on the wrong icon I have Narrowed the Problem down

The issue seems to be between SKSE and ENB (Wrapper or Injector)

If I Run TESV.exe or SkyrunLauncher.exe the game will start and the standard ENB messages appear in the Top corner (but not much point without SKSE)

In I try SKSE_loader.exe mostly all I get is a Black cmd window for a few seconds,  occasionally I will get an error :-

"The application was unable to start correctly (0xc000001d)."  (thats in a TESV error Message)

And even More Rarely :-

"Unable to Inject dll"

I have no Mods no ENB presets nothing but Skyrim SKSE and ENB

This happens with Both Wrapper and injector ENB

I have installed SKSE from both Steam and Using the Silverlock Installer (Just in case)

And I have tried different versions of ENB (3.08 and 2.62)

I have also run the DIrectx applications people suggest

At this point I am about ready to start Percussive Maintenance Procedures

ENB has settings you must change to run on AMD cards.

When configured correctly, unless you're using a heavy graphical improvement enb, performance will always be increased.

Most people can run the SKSE launcher with ENB just fine, so clearly it's a configuration issue.

Things to check:

Are you running SKSE as admin?

Have you enabled "DisableDriverMemoryManager" in enblocal

Make sure you use the "Wrapper" version of ENB, Injector is a whole different deal.

Use the latest binaries for ENB, downgrading rarely helps.

Try disabling "ExpandSystemMemoryx64" to see if it helps.

Make sure "EnableUnsafeMemoryHacks" is disabled, it's known to conflict with SKSE.

Disable "AutodetectVideoMemorySize" and ensure that your memory values are set correctly.

There's probably a few more things but that's what I remember off the top of my head.

OK WTF happened

Just spent the last half hour messing with various admin rights and security settings etc

And then I noticed that SKSE_loader was set to run in Win 8 comparability mode (I know  didn't set that so I have no idea how it got set)

so turned that off and *Poof* it started working

though it was the admin setting to start with (had ran in admin before, but had also set the skyrim folder to full security access)

So went through resetting the admin and security settings, and its still working (turned comparability mode back on and issue came back)

3 weeks of banging my head against a brick wall all for one check box

Now back to setting up my nods for the umpteenth time

Thanks everyone for the help
