Asteriasennall Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Below is a list of several mods that I've used to easily create/decorate custom homes for my characters. I LOVE them because they allow me to get creative and to build homes that are unique for each of my characters, without having to mess with the construction set at all. I've tested all but the last one extensively and have used them successfully for years with no issues. The last one is a new addition that looks to be another favorite of mine for future home-building. Claim That Interior by Fearabbit: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/27951 This one allows you to claim ownership of any interior cell in the game. It also has the handy feature of setting ownership of the cell and the cell's containers. It disables respawn of anything inside that interior. This includes spawn points, containers and NPCs. So be careful with companions and only cast this spell when they are not present just to be safe! It's great for making an Ayleid ruin or cave into a character's new a base! Redecoration by Uberspeedo: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/24498 This one is my favorite. It has three functions added by three spells. First, it allows you to save any static mesh with collision. This includes containers, rocks, furniture, decorative objects, etc. Second, a spell allows you to place a copy of any saved mesh into the game world. Lastly, the third spell allows you to move or resize any static mesh inside the game world. All together, you can use this to take almost any object from the game or even mods and use them to decorate your own home! The only drawback that I see is that it does not re-calculate pathgridding so your companions may have a hard time navigating heavily-decorated areas. Imperial Furniture by Amajor7: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/4703 An enhanced version by AndalayBay: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/33996 This mod was my first home decoration mod. It allows you to place furniture and some light sources anywhere in the game. After finding Redecoration I rarely use most of the furniture in this one, but I still use the light sources quite a bit. IMPORTANT: If you try to move these objects with redecoration they will disappear! What I do find handy is that you can save the merchant chest containing the limited number of furniture items with Redecoration and place a copy into your home. This gives you the items for free and allows you to get as many as you like without having to wait for the merchant to respawn. Decorator Assistant by beancounter: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/6021 This mod adds a spell to summon a static object that allows you to carefully position an object that you drag over it. I use Redecoration for most everything, but this mod is easier to use for clutter objects and it DOES allow you to reposition Imperial Furniture objects without them disappearing the way Redecoration does. Portable Portals by fg109: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/38712 This mod gives you 10 portable portals in your inventory that you can set into the game world (and later move, if you so wish). Once set in the game world (they look like Mages Guild teleport pads), they allow you to teleport instantly to any other set portal. You can name these portals and allow companions to follow you as you use them. This is great for traveling instantly between houses and other locations! I only wish there were more than 10 available! With Redecoration you can place these in interesting locations, such making a hidden portal on the wall next to a desk. When you teleport to one the game tries to place you above the pad, so keep this in mind if you use any location other than just on the floor. Portable Lights by ecat: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/42426 This one I haven't used much, but it allows you to place colored light sources in the game. Good for setting a particular area's mood! I'll try to post some screenshots of example homes I've made using these tools soon!
AmethystLR Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 Thanks for the list. I use pretty much all of these. It's nice to have someone put together a nice little list for them.
Poontank Posted July 7, 2012 Posted July 7, 2012 The first one's effect is similar to the console command setownership (a targeted command, click on an object with the console opened), just in spell form for more convenience. I'm using 'Decorator Assistant', 'Redecoration' and also 'Imperial Furniture (Renovated)'. There is an add-on to 'Decorator Assistant', a spell to unlock the items you have locked in place: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/12397 Sometimes placed and locked items reappear in the exact same spot if you just pick them up and drop them again, unlocking them with this mod prevents this. 'Redecoration' is the most badass tool imaginable, I'm gathering tons of nice-looking and unique decoration resources in Hawkhaven with the 'Save/Recall Item' function. Good idea to copy Damien Larkin's merchant chest! Didn't think of that. The last two mods are very interesting, I immediately snagged them for testing. Those portals are a good addition to the six Midas astral portals I make excessive use of. This is the lighting mod I have installed: http://oblivion.nexusmods.com/mods/16493 - I modified it to get a larger number of the (weightless) illumination crystals by editing the auto-add script, about the only scripting edit I'm capable of. Too bad artificial lighting suppresses shadows.
Asteriasennall Posted July 8, 2012 Author Posted July 8, 2012 The first one's effect is similar to the console command setownership (a targeted command' date=' click on an object with the console opened), just in spell form for more convenience.[/quote'] It really does more than what that command does. The claim interior spell first sets the ownership of the entire interior cell, and everything in it, to the player. This prevents trespassing and as an RP bonus the spell script also checks to see if there were living NPC owners of that cell previously. If so, they can become hostile towards the player and it can also incur a bounty for the player for the theft of property. So it won't just let you walk into someone's home and try to snag it. Not while they still live, that is! Also, if you attempt to claim ownership of one of your guild's halls it will expel you from the guild. Next, it disables respawn on everything in the interior. This makes every container inside safe, stops the cell from resetting after 3 days and disables monster spawn points too (useful for dungeons you wish to become your home). The description of that mod explains how all this works in much more detail. Those portals are a good addition to the six Midas astral portals I make excessive use of. Absolutely!! That's me too!
Poontank Posted July 8, 2012 Posted July 8, 2012 I've installed the portal mod in the meantime and it's an awesome addition! Thanks again for recommending that one! Midas Magic's six astral portals just aren't enough for my insta-travelling needs. Though my first portal, ruby, leads to a room with more portals (from a different mod) to all the towns' castles in Cyrodiil. And I have yet another mod, a cool house, which I discovered to have secretly added portals to some of the Mages Guild halls. It even grants the option to choose between the two stages of the Bruma chapter, you can travel to the original guild hall and the destroyed version. All these features weren't even described in the readme. Or 'lisez-moi' more precisely as it is a French mod. The 'Thermae de la Tamriel' mod also has portals to and from the city gates of every town. Although I haven't used them much up to now because you obviously have to enter the thermae from the city gate teleport pads first. The town exteriors are places I very rarely visit. Ten additional places that I can warp to at anytime mean a lot more freedom of movement, to instantly jump to screenshooting locations. A cool additional feature is the ability to change a placed portal's size so it looks more unique. On second thought - could have done that with 'Redecoration' as well...
