Darkening Demise Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 So I put my old hard drive into a new case hooked it up to my new motherboard and stuff. But um...my free windows 10 upgrade seems invalid now as I get a bloody Activate Windows Go to Settings to activate Windows. message overlaying everything now. Apparently an error appears Error code: 0x803f7001. What do I do? I cannot afford to buy Windows 10 for $120!
Guest Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 Isn't all of the OS mostly on the hard drive?
Darkening Demise Posted December 27, 2016 Author Posted December 27, 2016 Never mind apparently the free upgrade is tied to my old hardware therefore by moving my hard drive into a new case and using a new motherboard with a new processor I have invalidated the key and had to pay $127 for a new one. Now this one is tied to my Microcuck account so if something goes wrong I can try using that....but knowing Microcuck it will eventually break too and make me cough up even more money.
Tepi Posted December 27, 2016 Posted December 27, 2016 You could've bought OEM version of windows 10 for like 25€/30$ from various places. But granted you could have used non-activated windows just as well, it mainly has restrictions on personalisation like wallpaper etc and keeps nagging you to activate it but most everything works fine. And afaik it never expires. Just reminds you more often to activate.
