Kingsguard Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 First, this post contains heavy spoilers about Hillgrund's Tomb. Second, I'm not sure if this is the right forum to attend this topic, but let's find out. Also I'm sorry, it's quite late and I'm not a native english speaker, so prepare for mistakes. Just had a depressing experience in a boss fight, which I think was the first time ever. We all know that Skyrim is not that hard, most of the time you can just hack'n'slash your way through. I was only playing on Expert the whole time. I'm a bad fighter, my game lags and I just wanna relax with a tiny bit of a challenge. Had some losses but of course was dominating for the most part. This dungeon was no difference. You even get a part time quest follower, who fights alongside you and Lydia was there also, though she might have been a bit out of breath, cause we just made sweet love in a nice little bay at Darkwater's Crossing. So everything's fine until the final boss, which is a necromancer, who resurrects the slain Draugrs and teleports himself out of danger. I died that's ok, I underestimated his abilities and his Draugr army. Next try. Died again and again, you get the point. I tried different tactics, also began using the Scroll of Guardian Circle, which brought me the farthermost but still died in the process. After like two hours of hopeless fighting, I decided: enough is enough, maybe I shouldn't be here but I also didn't want to come back, cause I had this quest follower. So I changed the difficulty to Novice aaaaand died again. What is happening here? So despite I was now on the easiest difficulty, I used my whole arsenal again. Potions, the scroll, focused but to no better result. I finally discovered, that the necromancer would basically insta kill me with his frost spell. He did a damage of 260 hitpoints to me with a single spell on Novice! (At this time I was Lvl 29 with 275 health.) After that I watched some videos on youtube and everybody was just rushing in, with absolutly no strategy (well one guy had a good one, he just killed the necromancer while he was holding his initial speech) and had no troubles. I realize this sounds like whining but I only wanna know what is going on! It was really frustrating, cause from what I understand is that I had absolutly no chance against him without using the early kill exploit. I eventually gave up and killed him in god mode. It was the very first time I used god mode in 300 hours of Skyrim. Why was he so overpowered? It is possible I "mis-skilled"? (Trying new things here.) Was my equipment to weak? (Only had 200 armor rating. Look over utility.) But how can you still lose at Novice!? Did the difficulty change not trigger, cause I was already in the dungeon? I'm so confused. Well, maybe someone has an idea or some consoling words. I'm done. I'm outta here. Oh and I don't use any combat enhancers. The only related ones I have is "Attack Commitment No turning during attacks" and "Dead Body Collision", which kinda messes with the AI but this is still no explanation for that what happened.
Nergui Posted October 5, 2016 Posted October 5, 2016 Buff your magic resistance - Lord's Stone, Ysgramor's Shield, Saviour's Hide, Agent of Mara, play a breton. Also, Hillgrund's Tomb is one of those "do early" dungeons so Draugr Deathlords wont spawn.
Guest Posted October 8, 2016 Posted October 8, 2016 I always used to struggle with him, but then I do run a bunch of combat enhancers so it's my own fault. This might sound very close to cheesing it, but what I tend to do is keep Golldir on a passive leash, stay in sneak mode and pick off his undead gang at range from the room before it. Some will aggro into the room but they're easy pickings,he hardly ever bothers to go beyond the main area and if he does and I'm not ready to take him, I'll retreat to reset his aggro and stop him searching. At some point he runs out of resurrection options. And that's when I send Golldir in to act as a meat shield while I knock two bells out of him. It helps immensely if you can mess with his magicka regen using poisons while interrupting his casting with a shield to his stupid face. If he gets staggered a couple of times he soon goes down like the proverbial sack of night soil. I usually celebrate by shagging Golldir's brains out. But that's me.
Guest Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 I made a batch file just for situations like this one. (well, I made a ton of batchfiles but that's Off-Topic) Mr. Hillgrund or Whoever pops out of their tomb and wanders around going, "what woke me up?" The Draugrs stand around breathing loudly. If the game requires it, I "incinerate to oblivion" (it's in a mod, nevermind) This method of play backfires in Potema's little sanctum, where instead of being chased by the draugurs You have to seek and destroy them, and sometimes they can be hard to see with all of those sparks trying to shock you to death. Make friends, save the world, come home and say "yes dear" to ysolda, and that's a typical playthrough. If it's stragedy you want, there are endless walkthroughs....

Are you loading your save file within a close distance of the final boss? Are you perhaps suffering from mechanic in this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=i6tJKyl6R60 Seeing a modlist might help with narrowing down why you get oneshot. A spell that hits your for 260 damage would hit for 520 on adept. Regardless of magic and frost resistance no spell should hit that hard normally, especially at level 29 You could cheese the boss and just activate god mode or kill command him, but wheres the fun in that.
fernandojdb Posted October 9, 2016 Posted October 9, 2016 i started skyrim playing legendary, and decided not to reduce difficulty, there is always a legit strategy to beat a monster. First you have to keep in mind, monster level up with your level, so be efficient and try not to level up without a reason, take first the most important skills and then stop leveling up until you feel you are too strong for monsters. For me, now, skyrim has no sense lower than legendary difficulty.
MataHari Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 Before you started the quest in Hillgrund Tomb. Did you finished Arngeir's radiant The Words of Power quest in High Gate Ruins? If you did finish the quest then cast the Flaming Familar spell as much as you can.
SevPOOTS Posted October 10, 2016 Posted October 10, 2016 I remember this. i actually got him to 50% health after retrying 20 times. i just insta killed him on novice by using cmd. i already enjoyed the fight. Let me enjoy the rewards xD
