Alternative ways to get to Institute (spoilers)

I'm doing a bit of an SexyInstitute overhaul and playing with the idea of getting the player to the institute much earlier in the game and think I can do it without breaking any quests.

 

During my research I've noticed a lot of references to the Institute Tunnel and haven't been able to work out how it is used to get in or out of the Institute? Is it something to do with breaking out the 13 Synths?

The tunnel is used if you attack the people in the institute when you first arrive there.  ONce this is done, the only way back into the institute is by siding with the Minutemen.  They find an old access tunnel that you sneak in though.
