Clean New game?

Recommended Posts

I've just been curious, say one playthrough is "dirty" from removing and adding mods that causes that playthrough to have CTD. Will actually playing a new game help it start fresh? Or it's best to do a clean re-install and pick your mods safely from there?

Basically, is new game a guaranteed "Clean" start?

If you don't CTD because of something else than script corruption it's totally safe to just start a new game. Something else you could try, to rescue your current savegame, is adding

[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

to your skse.ini file, if you didn't already do that, or try to "clean" your savegame with a script cleaner. Both do the same thing, though SKSE does it step-by-step whilst the tool cuts out all it can find at once. The SKSE snippet should be used before even starting a new game, though.

But be aware that this neither really will clean your safe and there's no guarantee for success, nor will it repair bad written scripts that also may cause CTDs.

If you CTD because of mod incompatibility, missing/overwritten mod files or sth alike, you have to review your mod setup. You can obviate those scenarios by using Mod Organizer, as it keeps your individual mods separated and your actual Skyrim data folder untouched.
