From what i understand a save game can contain references or objects

from a previously uninstalled mod, which may or may not be visible.

So what techniques are there to achieve a 'clean' save game?Other than starting a new character or something.I ask because the new version of sexout lust requires a clean save. However this begs another question is it a good idea in general to do a clean save when upgrading mods?

In most cases simply disabling the mod, saving in game, exiting. Then reloading is enough to clean the save as long as the mod is doing what it's supposed to be doing and not writing *blargh references which require special uninstallation via a script to clean it. WMX(weapon mods extended) is one that requires this.

As for doing a clean save when upgrading? You don't always need to do it unless something is seriously changed from one version to another. Meaning that a whole pile of scripts were changed/scrapped and they no longer reference what they used to. That's why reading the readme is important, it gives you an idea of what you need to do, and whether or not the author has left a message saying "gimmie a clean save, I changed a pile of stuff. Which may or may not break your game if you don't make it clean."

*blargh is a semi-official term. :P

The proper method for cleaning a save:

Disable the mod(s) with OBMM or Wrye, then start oblivion and load your current save. Once it is loaded then hit escape and make a new save. Then exit oblivion completely. You now have a cleaned save. You can now enable an upgrade to that mod or whatever else.

NOTE: Making a new save and just reloading it in game is not enough to completely clean things. You will still have remenants of code/script if they were active in memory. It is best to completely exit the game as this wipes all memory so that when you restart your game is clear.

Further Note: It is best after making major changes to first try a new game to see if things are working properly and THEN try using a clean save. Sometimes a clean save is not enough and if you don't try the new game first you may think something is broken when it is not.
