Magical Tattoos: how would you implement it?

Magical Tattoos = Mattoos

 

Rather than physical gear, you would equip a mattoo. ultimately, i'd like for the player to craft/find a scroll of the mattoo which can then be equipped. with the abundance of slots, there's a huge range of effects that could be built and they could be related to the position on the body.

 

I've got much of that worked out on paper, but i'm torn between methods of implementation.

 

for example, a right leg tattoo, slot 53. what of these 2 techniques would be better?

 

1) remove the existing body part and replace it with the tattooed version. it'd be that same leg portion of the mesh, but with a skin that has the tattoo added.

2) overlay the tattoo. make it a mesh that fits the mesh like every other equipable item in the game.

 

For #1, the advantage of this would be consistency with the mesh. the disadvantages tho are lack of portability, and being stuck with the resolution of the body skin.

For #2, potentially higher resolution and portable to other body meshes. the huge disadvantage tho is that the offset from body mesh to mattoo mesh could be perceptible. That, and i'm a texturer, not a modeller. it's one thing to get someone to cut up a body into different body parts to edit the skin.

 

If there's another option, i'd be interested in hearing it.

Has already been done in this mod and uses a diffrent slot although it's not peerfect it is a start
