As soon as you arrive after fast-travelling to Castle Leyawiin, turn your head slightly to the left. There's a group of small rocks close to the wall. One of them is hollow and contains the equipment (it gives you the 'open container' icon when looking at it).

 

It was probably a bad idea after all to choose a container that 'blends into the landscape'... I should have selected an ordinary chest instead.
