A fix to instant crashing without Error.

So lately ive been looking around the web for a fix for this issue. Tons of people have been having this issue as well and have found there own fixes and such but quite a few people have tried pretty much all of these and still are not able to get it to run. (The issue being you get a instant crash when you hit play with no error message) SO heres another fix I found yesterday by accident.

So if you tried that windowed borderless stuff ect try this.

Restart your pc so you can reset the pattern(You will see what I mean soon) and go into fallout 4 Launcher and change your resolution and let it crash like it normally does. NOW, go back in to the launcher and switch back to your normal resolution, and it SHOULD work.

Not sure why this works and of course like all the other fixes this might not work for everyone buuut..its something.

Remember that everytime you exit fallout 4 and go back into it, you must do this every single time, change your resolution to a lower or higher one depending on what resolution you use, let it crash and then go back and turn it to what ever resolution you use and voila.

ALSO im not entirely sure if restarting the pc resets the pattern so if you try it and it still crashes, try switching to a different resolution and trying it and seeing if it works, THEN if it does start up using the wrong resolution, restart it with the same resolution letting it crash, then switch to your normal resolution.

Its all about making it crash on the wrong resolution so when you re try the second time it starts on your normal resolution you play at.

Thanks for sharing a solution.

No problem. Its mostly for the people who cant start the game at all due to some fullscreen problems I'm pretty sure. The normal fixes would be to enable windowed mode and borderless ect, but there are still some that have tried this and the rest of the fixes, me being one of them.

I was having that problem and like you mentioned "windowed/Borderless" worked for me BUT I still on occasion get something a bit more. "You Graphics driver has failed and has recovered". (Radeon Card). and that happenes in Skyrim and FO4. I've tried all the latest drivers even the betas. So I just deal with it till they find a fix for it.

Things work in mysterious ways. Well I fixed the issue by installing windows 10, fallout 4 works amazing. Strangely enough though people have had this issue even on windows 10, so I'm still not sure what the issue is, but oh well..

Mogie56, I'm a Radeon user too and you might want to try maybe increasing your fan's clock (not more than 70%) and/or underclocking your core and/or memory (5/25 increments at a time, respectively). That seems to be a good stress relief in most cases. An alternative might be FPS capping, but don't quote me on that.

As far as instant crashing without error goes, I seem to have lessened those by just starting a new game, as unfortunate as that sounds. Though now I suffer from other ills, but the crashing dropped significantly.

Well unfortunately its impossible to start a new game for people having this instant crash. If you do happen to have this error as many do, you can't actually start the game at all.

Oh, my bad! I thought you meant instant as in that "spontaneous", random, mid-playthrough, no-warning kind of crash...

creating a new batch of falloutprefs.ini and fallout4.ini by way of removing the faulty ones (which I think is at least part of what happens in your solution) is known to do some good as well... either way!

I got this now as well, it started murdering my gameplay about 6 days ago, before Automatron DLC. It has increased violently since then, and I exclusively get this crash in settlements - ANY settlement. I've removed mods, restarted the game, replaced/deleted and regenerated the ini file but it just refuses to work. I am about to try the resolution change then revert it, but I am afraid I won't be able to play whatsoever anymore, and I recently reinstalled the game to get rid of the "graphic driver death" issue, which worked.

Uuuurgh.... fix one thing, and something else pops up instead.
