That's what I did, however, Bethesda thought it would be a great idea to make the lighting in the world directly effect the pipboy screen while you are looking at it. That makes it almost impossible to read anything on the screen when there is bright lights if you change the background. The only way that I have found around this is to point my character directly at the light source before I open the pipboy. (ex. turn and look directly at the sun if I am outside.)
