Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Hello, I'm in trouble. I have only a limited access to internet. Not speaking about parental restriction, or (I hope) firewall. I have only a partial access to internet. Yesterday I had complete access and today, I can only access a few websites, (namely: Loverslab, youtube and google) and not the others (no wikipedia, no forum that could help me) I already had the same problem earlier this week, but It was solved by doing update to my windows 7, but here It can't connect to the server for the updates. I'm on the same network with another computer and the other computer does not suffer from these troubles. I have no choice than to post here in hope of help (never expected to ask for this kind of help on LL but here I am). 1st time that being a pervert may help me in my life In the hope that someone can help me, Thanks for your help.
Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 You're making me wonders on the definition of a pervert. (and sorry if I have offended anyone, I'm not thinking badly of anyone here) Yes, I used the troubleshooter and it didn't find anything. I also made a restore point the right when I got my internet back last time and already restored at that moment, but it didn't work.
bjornk Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 How do you know you have a "partial internet connection"? Is that what Windows tells you? If that's the case the troubleshoot should tell you the reason. What does your browser say when you try to load one of the websites you cannot currently access?
Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 I end up with a "connection timed out", my computer tells me I have internet access, but other than the 3 sites I mentioned (loverslab, Google and Youtube), I always get a timed out. Troubleshoot tell me that I need to restart my Modem (done) or the connection between my access point, router, or cable modem and the internet is broken (which is not possible or my other computer wouldn't connect)
bjornk Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Try running tracert -d en.wikipedia.org in a command window (cmd) and post the output. Also try running ipconfig /all in the same command window and post the output. Is this a wireless connection? Do you see any warnings or errors in Event Viewer?
Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 Well, I didn't check wikipedia this time because it didn't work last time, but it seems that it works. Wikipedia is now on the list of the websites that works, So for the sake of the test, I tried to connect to the nexus for the sake of the test and I got all timed out On the other hand, for the event viewer, the DNS clients events in the error tabs reach 69 the last hour (no warnings in the last hour). For the IP config, I'm sorry but I'm a bit worried to put this kind of information on the web, not that I think you could use it badly, but that would make these information available to anyone with an account on loverslab, which I'm not a big fan of, especially if there is still something to try before. The DNS Servers (as stated in the ipconfig) Is 192.168.24.1 It is an ethernet connection, I don't use the wireless.
bjornk Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 You can post the outputs after deleting MAC/physical addresses or other stuff that you think it's important. What do the DNS errors in Event Viewer say? This sounds like an issue either with your NIC or your DNS servers. Or maybe a problem with the cable? Try entering DNS servers manually. Use Google's public DNS for instance (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) but first, use tracert to check if you can access them. (e.g. tracert -d 8.8.8.8) Edit: Actually try running this first in a command window: nslookup www.nexusmods.com and then nslookup www.nexusmods.com 8.8.8.8 If you have a wireless adapter on your PC/laptop, disable the wired connection and try using the wireless. It could be an issue with your network adapter. PS. 192.168.24.1 is a local address which probably points to your modem or router? Is this indeed your modem/router's IP address?

That I could access some website but not other because of the cable? Because, I actually changed cable a week ago. How do I setup the wireless connection? I don't see it in the config menu edit: Oh yes, and no answer from 8.8.8.8 nor 8.8.4.4

Log name: System Source DNS Clients Events Event ID 1012 Level: Error User: SERVICE RÉSEAU (french for network service) OpCode: Info This doesn't sound good. Open the %WINDIR%\System32\drivers\etc\ folder and see if there's a file named hosts there and can you open it with say, Notepad? If it's not there then you need to recreate it (I can post the content of the default one), but the question is what deleted it? If it's locked then try Process Explorer to see which process is using it. This might be an indication of a virus/malware infection. You think the cable could be the problem? That I could access some website but not other because of the cable? Because, I actually changed cable a week ago. How do I setup the wireless connection? I don't see it in the config menu A badly made or broken Ethernet cable may cause random disconnections. Try with another cable. If this is a laptop with a wireless adapter then you should be able to see the wireless adapter in the NIC list. You should enable it to be able to use it. PS. I'd suggest running sfc /scannow in an elevated (i.e. ran as admin) command window. I'd also consider the possibility of a virus/malware infection. If you want to recreate the hosts file, run services.msc, stop the "DNS Client" service, delete the old hosts file and create a new one (New->Text Document) and rename it as hosts, without any file extention. Paste the following into it and save the file. # Copyright © 1993-2009 Microsoft Corp. # # This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows. # # This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each # entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should # be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name. # The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one # space. # # Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual # lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol. # # For example: # # 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server # 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host # localhost name resolution is handled within DNS itself. # 127.0.0.1 localhost # ::1 localhost 127.0.0.1 localhost ####################################################
Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 I can access the host file, it seems complete : 127.0.0.1 genuine.microsoft.com127.0.0.1 mpa.one.microsoft.com127.0.0.1 sls.microsoft.com Other lines are just comments I can't access Process explorer (it's not on one of the available websites), but the host file is indeed being used. It's not a laptop, it's a tower and i Don't see a wireless adapter in the NIC list. For the malware, I already had the default windows antivirus make a scan, as well as malware byte and I Cleaned my computer with CCleaner too. The Scannow found an error, "windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log" The system file repair changes with take effect after the next reboot. I'm restarting the computer now. edit: HELL YEAH, It seems like the broken file was the reason of all this. I can now access internet again. Thank you for all your support.
bjornk Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 Looks like this is a pirate copy of Windows. Well, corrupt files on your disk means either your disk is dying or some malware/virus has fucked up your files. See this message if you want to check your disk's SMART data for any errors: http://www.loverslab.com/topic/53654-ctd-randomly-with-out-any-errors-after-10-15-minutes-of-game-play/?do=findComment&comment=1354260 I recommend running a full disk check after you've backed up all your important files.
Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 The problem is back. I did the scan again and it didn't work. I'm trying to recreate the hosts file and I'll be back. Edit: Done and I still have problems. By the way, I can't access the smart tools (they are on unavailable websites), nor can I see a tutorial on a full disk check (I have nothing of importance on disk C other than windows itself, so It should be safe to run one?)
bjornk Posted October 24, 2015 Posted October 24, 2015 For the malware, I already had the default windows antivirus make a scan, as well as malware byte and I Cleaned my computer with CCleaner too. Windows 7 does not have a default antivirus program. Windows Defender in Windows 7 is just a useless anti-malware program. Microsoft Security Essentials is an antivirus but it is also pretty useless. Malwarebytes is not an antivirus either, neither is CCleaner. You need a *proper* antivirus program to scan your system. The Scannow found an error, "windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.log windir\logs\CBS\CBS.log" The system file repair changes with take effect after the next reboot. Check the CBS.log for the files that aren't fixed. Try running SFC /SCANNOW in Safe Mode. You might want to have your Windows 7 media nearby. Before everything else check your SMART data and run a disk check. If this is a problem with your disk, repairing files is pointless. I can't access the smart tools (they are on unavailable websites), nor can I see a tutorial on a full disk check (I have nothing of importance on disk C other than windows itself, so It should be safe to run one?) It's not as good as a SMART viewer but you may try this, in an elevated command window type wmic and in it, type diskdrive get status. Not getting OK as an output definitely means that you have a problem with your disk. As I've already said this is either a disk problem or the work of a virus/malware. I don't think I can suggest anything else. You may have to format your drive and re-install your Windows. I'm on the same network with another computer and the other computer does not suffer from these troubles. Why don't you use the other computer to download one of the SMART tools or Process Explorer. Isn't this a home network?
Elgate Posted October 24, 2015 Author Posted October 24, 2015 I am already working in safe mode. I found the logs, but I don't see anything abnormal, and the file is WAY too long to read everything, do you have anything in particular I should look out for? (or how to make a spoiler ? It's too long to paste here without it) the last lines are: 2015-10-24 18:06:22, Info CSI 000004ba [sR] Verify and Repair Transaction completed. As for the other computer, It's not mine, it's a computer for works and my father was using it. I had to wait for him to finish. I'l go try to download the smart tools from there, as well as an antivirus. Any good/free one you'd recommend? That I can download completely without an installer that require internet? Finally, The disk drive status is all OK Thanks for everything you're doing. Edit: I don't understand, I changed nothing, but now I restarted the computer and started it normally and it works. I'm lost. I don't know what's happening. I don't think the problem is solved, I just think it's on hold.

Elgate Posted October 26, 2015 Author Posted October 26, 2015 Well, It seems it was actually the router. For some reason, it had a delayed effect on my father's computer. He had the same problem yesterday, changed the router with a spare one we had and everything's back in order. sorry for bothering you with this, and thanks for helping me ;-)
