From what I understand, it uses a different system to detect object collisions, one that's more focused on clothing physics, compared to HDT-PE's general-purpose physics. Do I need to remove normal HDT before installing HDT-SMP? They seem to be incompatible with each other, at least for the time being, so yes.

It's not incompatible, I have both HDT PE and HDT SMP working at the same time. Had issues with the 'latest' HDT SMP off the chinese site, but found this combo to work on my version of windows pretty well. Try installing the attached in Mod Organizer and see it works. HDT SMP 03_25_2015.zip
