Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Multiple reasons: 1) It's SOOO unstable with my overclock. I actually had to UNDER clock my CPU to get stability. 2) three times now (in the period of 2 weeks) it has randomly decided that it want's to erase/corrupt the mbr. First two times? No big deal. Popped in the disk, went to "repair computer", cmd prompt then "bootrec.exe /fixboot" problem solved. NOW: "bootrec.exe /fixboot "element not found" "NONE of the bootrec cmds are working. This is bullshit. I'm pissed. I spent two weeks tweaking Windows 8 so it ran EXACTLY how I wanted, it ran fine (somewhat, other than OC problems that I solved) for about a month after that... and now this MBR bullshit. I swear if I didn't need WinE I'd go to Linux.
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Run a full check on your hardware after getting it up and running again (fix the MBR issue). You shouldn't be having this problem. I haven't heard of anyone having MBR issues with Windows like you are. Might be a hardware issue (harddrive) or even an infection (reinfecting the MBR and causing problems).. Same problem might be causing your overclock problem as well. I know a few individuals using 8.1 and have overclocked the shit out of their hardware without any problems at all. In fact most individuals I know in RL have overclocked systems . Responded to PM.. Wish you the best of luck..
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 I've actually read a lot of people having issues with Windows 8 and overclocking. I'm letting 8.1 download, currently, now that I'm back into Windows (yay sitting on automatic repair while I "enjoy" a nice long shower )
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Well my friends are using 8.1 that are overclocking. not win 8.. I am still on Win 7.. no reason to upgrade yet. . If I do might be the first time I have dual boot..
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Well, MalwareBytes is coming back clean. I'm not sure if they've updated ComboFix to work with Win8 yet. I know last time I tried to use it on Win8 it did more harm than good. What HDD tester do you suggest? Apparently the ones on Hiren's are junk, because they tell me everything is fine all the time.
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Say. .. did you overclock with software or directly in Bios ? There is a difference. Most of my friends OC the ol' way.. directly in bios tweaking the votages and such.. http://www.extremetech.com/computing/164209-windows-8-banned-by-worlds-top-benchmarking-and-overclocking-site. Apparently Win8 meses with the RTC which screws around with some of the timing. Might be a reason for crashing. http://www.extremetech.com/computing/164294-clocking-in-windows-8-rtc-overclocking-issues-are-blown-way-out-of-proportion http://www.techspot.com/news/53781-windows-8-overclock-related-rtc-bug-isolated-and-fixed.html http://www.ocaholic.ch/modules/smartsection/item.php?itemid=1071&page=6
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 I found while on Win7 that messing with the voltage on my board/cpu combo didn't provide that much stability. I tried it that way with Win7 and I kept getting crashes... but when I cranked up the multiplier? All was fine. I've never used OC software. If the BIOS doesn't support it, it's not meant to happen, IMO. I'll dig into those, once I get everything tested for failures. I really don't think my drive is going bad, though. It's a 500gb Seagate 10,000rpm. I dropped some cash for it when I got it. lol. I'll dig into those links tomorrow. I'm frustrated and worn out from this fiasco tonight.
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Oh it was something. Automatic Repair took me back almost 3 weeks, so I have to redownload 3ds Max >.< Take your time.. It might be nothing.. Btw, have I mentioned I love how kind you are? <3
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Well, SeaTools returned a failure on a drive. Not my OS drive, but still a failure. Time to let it run through DOS SeaTools -.- boring day ahead.
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 make sure your MBR is on the same drive as the OS.. If you installed it onto a system with multiple drives.. it might have been installed on another drive by accident. (Windows does strange things. While at it .. try memtest to be sure your memory is fully functional as well.
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 It shouldn't be. I disconnected all other drives when I installed Windows. So the OS drive was the only one on the mobo.
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Excellent.. and bad news.. . Excellent that you found out you had hardware problems before something serious happened.. Bad News because you still haven't figured out what caused the MBR corruption. Hopefully your further testing will determine what was the issue. I had a problem with my system... replaced memory and all sorts of good stuff. In the end.. it was and could only be the motherboard/ processor.. .. Everything else was tested and confirmed working or replaced. Hope you don't have the same problem.

I installed the new chipset driver for my board from the ASUS site, and got back to a no boot. So apparently I was wrong in assuming this was an MBR issue. It's something in the chipset driver. What? idk, but it has something to do with the driver from ASUS.
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 Now to see if I can fix my overclock >.< If I'm lucky maybe I'll be able to squeeze 4.5 out instead of my previous 4.1. I've read of a few pushing my CPU to as high as 5.2.
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Drivers can wreck havoc on systems.. Chipset more so than other drivers like USB.. It is the main driver for the entire system. Sets the stage for the work to be done if you will. I can believe a faulty driver is to blame. Now.. have you tried to change the boot command.. might have reset your first boot drive. Chipset/bios updates can change settings.. kind of like a fresh build. Unless your boot drive is connected Sata0 port (most boards). It might reset to Sata0.. (man that has been years since I had that issue ). There might not be anything wrong with your chip set. If there is.. you might have to roll back to a previous one and check for or submit a ticket to ASUS on this issue. Before.. make sure you have the correct chip-set.. yes.. double check/actually check to be sure. Wouldn't be the first time that happened. If it is correct.. roll back is a must. Now to see if I can fix my overclock >.< If I'm lucky maybe I'll be able to squeeze 4.5 out instead of my previous 4.1. I've read of a few pushing my CPU to as high as 5.2. No, don't do that. Keep it standard clock.. for at least a week or so until you are confident you have stomped this issue. Remember you almost lost your entire setup.. next time you might not be so lucky.. The next issue might corrupt your OS or data.. Keep it standard/ default is my advise.
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 You think some of my problems could be caused by a faulty RAM chip? I recently got a 3rd 4gb stick (same manufacturer and frequency as my other two).
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 It can be anything. Memory not being matched frequency/voltage timing etc or even just bad could really mess things up as well. Since you are working on it already.. run mem test for a bit to see if there are any issues to be sure. If you do need to replace or upgrade .. best practice is to get completed sets of matched ram. I got a set of 4 matched (same package) for my rig. (old) unfortunately it isn't a pproved for my current rig .. Second is to get approved memory (from MoBo site list) for your rig. These are tested and confirmed to be fully compatible .. (this along with processors however now adays it isnt' that important or processors . )
Anatriax Posted July 8, 2015 Author Posted July 8, 2015 I guess I can deal with my original 8gb of RAM, and stock clocking for another 6 months (when I'll be able to afford a totally new build). Keep your fingers crossed that nothing major happens between now and then!
RitualClarity Posted July 8, 2015 Posted July 8, 2015 Dont need months.. just a week or so to make sure it works well. If you overclock.. try with the original set of ram not the added one first.. See how that works for you. then add the extra stick to see if it works for you then.
RitualClarity Posted July 9, 2015 Posted July 9, 2015 It don't have to be paired. Many use single. Don't get the same performance boost as having them paired.
