Crashing in Falkreath

Hey guys I've been crashing recently when I go to Falkreath.

I'm not sure about load order, but Falkreath is basically the Bermuda Triangle of Skyrim - there's more stuff there to load than anywhere else, so the game will crap itself and crash. I tend to have more luck entering the town through the graveyard than following the road. You could try running Skyrim Performance Monitor from the Nexus and see if you hit the ~3.5 VRAM limit on crash. I hope someone has more helpful advice, though.

There are some mods that are known to cause this issue. One of the big ones was Scenic Carriages. It seems to be the main blame for many lost games in Skyrim, but as you do not have it installed we can scratch that one. The other one that seems to come up in some circles is one you have installed. That's UFO - Ultimate Follower Overhaul, its quite old and even though it has been updated many are pointing to it. This is the main reason that most have moved over to Amazing Follower Tweaks. There could be any number of other mods that are doing it. A good bet is any mod that is modifying large areas of the map or towns. It has also been pointed to be a scripting issue as well. The is a way to test this out.

 

I too had this issue and it was breaking my game. This is what I did. Rename your Skyrim directory to Skyrim_Old. Create a new empty Skyrim folder and if you are using Steam reinstall using it. If you have the DVDs, use them and install Skyrim into the new empty folder. Also backup all your save games just in case. After the reinstall is completed, load you most recent game, minus all the mods, yes no mods installed. It should load, but you will get the message that you have mods missing, just keep going. Yes your custom character is going to go default and may be in there underwear if you are wearing custom clothes or armor. Once in game, make a clean save without all your mods, I am sure this will be painful but its just for testing and you should have a backup, right? Now reload the new save and travel to Falkreath and see if you can make it so the city without a crash. You most likely will be able to get there without a crash. If not than you are dealing with a script that has been left in your save game and you will have to decide if it is worth trying to save the game by cleaning the the scripts out, and or starting a whole new game. The thing is if you just start a new game you are going to run into this problem again and again. OK, but we are not done yet. Now, go back and rename the new install folder from Skyrim to Skyrim_fresh or what ever you like and change the name of the Skyrim_old back to Skyrim. Make sure all your mods are activated and in the same load order and load that new save up. You should be hit with all sorts of messages about your mods installing there menus and other things. Hopefully your character has not been changed to much from your original. Now again moved around the region. Go to another hold and travel back to Falkreath and see if you get a crash. You may find that you crash right away, or you may be able to continue on playing the game. Of course some of the items you had will be lost and some will come back. I would go through your inventory and write down the id numbers of as many things as you can so you can use the console to get them back again. You may be able to continue to play the game this way for a while, but it is going to happen again. It did for me and then it even spread into areas around Riften. In the end I gave up and dumped my player and created a new one. I had not invested that much time into mine, well I had really, all the major quests done and was going for the DLCs, but it had to be done. This was before the script cleaning tools had been made, and this was just something I came up with as a stop gap measure to buy me some time. You may be able to use the script cleaning tools to get things back to working without doing all this. But in the end you need to do a bit of research as to what mods work well with others. You have a very mod heavy game and thinning things out may help. There has also been some talk lately about SOS causing save game bloat and causing other scripting errors. SOS seems to be fairly script heavy, so this is the kind of thing that has to be expected from such a mod.

 

Anyway I wish you luck on finding a solution, but I have a feeling you may have to totally rethink the mods you want, need, and whats going to give you a long play through in the end. I think you are looking at building a new character.

I had this problem as well, it seemed to stop after I uninstalled the high resolution packs.
